We compared the Replay 5040 directly to a TiVo Series2, and we have to give the slight edge to the Replay in terms of video quality. In highest-quality mode during a recording of E.T.--The Extra-Terrestrial, the TiVo's S-Video output looked slightly sharper than that of the Replay, so we saw more detail in a faraway shot around the kitchen table as Elliot describes his sighting. However, the Replay was better at dealing with MPEG artifacts; it introduced fewer moving blotches on Elliot's dark bedroom door. The Replay's progressive-scan component-video output looked better than either box's S-Video output. The component-video jack improved the picture's sharpness, stability, and color, although we'd prefer that the 5040 have an option for interlaced component video, too.

Under $300 dollars for a full featured DVR, not bad. This is only the 40 hour model, I couldn't find anywhere mentioned how big the hard drive is in it. I use a 40 hour model right now but pay a monthly fee to rent it from my dish company. If the average price to rent these is 3-6 dollars per month than you would have this paid off in 5 to 10 months.
