We compared the Replay 5040 directly to a TiVo Series2, and we have to give the slight edge to the Replay in terms of video quality. In highest-quality mode during a recording of E.T.--The Extra-Terrestrial, the TiVo's S-Video output looked slightly sharper than that of the Replay, so we saw more detail in a faraway shot around the kitchen table as Elliot describes his sighting. However, the Replay was better at dealing with MPEG artifacts; it introduced fewer moving blotches on Elliot's dark bedroom door. The Replay's progressive-scan component-video output looked better than either box's S-Video output. The component-video jack improved the picture's sharpness, stability, and color, although we'd prefer that the 5040 have an option for interlaced component video, too.

Under $300 dollars for a full featured DVR, not bad. This is only the 40 hour model, I couldn't find anywhere mentioned how big the hard drive is in it. I use a 40 hour model right now but pay a monthly fee to rent it from my dish company. If the average price to rent these is 3-6 dollars per month than you would have this paid off in 5 to 10 months.

Can you use this with Satellite or does it only work with cable?

Oh great . It just said that it could not find the stupid server. Time to start playing games if the site is having problems. :(

What I said was...

I have no idea, but it is worth finding out. I know that the DVR we have now uses a digital card to let it know what channels to unlock. With the right card you can watch any channel including pay per view, but that would be illegeal. So if this machine has the ability to read that card than it would be able to get the programming information from their servers.
