About Japanese Cell Phones

Hi, I'm new to this forum...so if this has been asked before, please forgive me.

I want to ask if anyone knows of any Japanese cell phones that I can buy in Japan and use in Canada.

I've heard that you have to buy one that has GSM and uses a SIM card, but then not all of them work...
I am very confused right now...
A friend of mine is using a Japanese phone here in Canada with a SIM card...but I have no idea which ones will work here and which ones will not...
Does anyone know the answers?

You should buy vodafone(softbank) 3G phone. However, Japanese phones are locked to their carrier so you can not buy it seperately. The best way is try to get one through auctions. I am in Japan now. if you need help please let me know.
