I would appreciate any help with xp pro sp1 or sp2 that unexpectedly reboots.

I had a OS partition that had xppro xp2 loaded and was using Norton as av. As several of you have already noted Norton over time slows a system down and may cause other problems. I started experiencing lots of problems with blue screens etc. I went through antispyware [several different software apps], av, trojan cleaners. All to no avail. Still had the problem.

I formated the partition and reloaded xp pro. I had lots of problems getting it to load. It would say can't find something, I'd go find it, it would still say it couldn't find it and so on. I reformated the partition several times to try to clean it off and finally sucessfully loaded xp pro and left it at sp1.

I've applied all OS patches, changed to McAfee, updated it as well. Loaded several spyware and adware apps. I've run them to be sure the OS is clean.

Now it reboots for no apparent reason, at different times with no decernable pattern. IE, I can be opening a app, or clicking on firefox, or opening eudora, or just clicking desktop properties or just clicking 'my computer' to open 'manage' - - - it reboots, black screen, restart. After the OS reboots and I do some things like opening word and saving a .doc then opening webmail, [for example] and wanting to save a doc and doing some other things after awhile ,,,,,it reboots. Sometimes it takes 10 mins to reboot, sometimes it takes 30 - 40 mins to reboot.

I've checked everything I know how to check, all the performance options, all the user profiles, everything. I've gone through all the error logs to try to find something. Still does it.

Any help is Greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

MgC12, I was running sp2 before all this happened. Now I'm running sp1. I have not applied the sp2 patch. I have searched Microsoft's knowledge base more than several times but have found no solutions I have not tried. I have not called them. Thanks for responding.

There could be other problems for example some hardware could be damaged. I once had some RAM that had corrupted and it caused chaos. You should keep an open mind on what the problem could be. Although one thing to note is... does it reboot properly with the shut down screen ect or does it turn off instantly and then turn back on. If it turns straight off, then it might help having some hardware tested. A local computer shop might know where you can have that done or they might even do it themselves.
