The PS3 has been slated to have a hard drive that will support and will even include preinstalled Linux. This could be a breakthrough event not just for Linux but also for other alternative operating systems as well, providing a unique opportunity for people to try something that would be more difficult on their regular computer.

This would be cool if it meant a good alternative for Windows.

Anyone could order the Linux kit for the PS2, it came with the Sony Linux distro, a harddrive and a network controller -- this is nothing new but an extension of something that was "special" before.

And it gives the unit a better sale, as it can RUN Linux based games..

Wonder if I can get Tribes 2 to run on it??
Interstate 82 would be cool also..

Don't bet on it, there is so much hardware IP involved with the PS3 that Sony could / would never release software and code that would give anyone with basic C talent a roadmap for reverse engnieering the console. Like the PS2 Linux distro I'd wager that it will support basic 2D video and simple sound, nothing more.
