re shdoccl.dll requests

I've been getting some requests for web sites to open shdoccl.dll. Someone suggested this may be related to spyware. I ran spybot, adaware, and windows defender beta 2. Also did a complete scan with McAfee antivirus software. It's still happening. Here is my hijackthis log. Does anyone see anything suspicious?

Theres some strange things on here, most likely the problem. :eww


Your copy of HijackThis needs to be in a folder of it's own. When HJT fixes anything, it makes backups of the original files in the folder it is in. For this reason it cannot be run from a Zip file or from Temporary folders because the backups will be deleted. Having the backups could be VITAL to restoring your system if something went wrong in the FIX process!


1. Please go to you're 'My Documents' folder, right-click and select 'New > Folder' then name the folder 'HJT'.

2. Copy and paste HijackThis.exe to the new folder.



3. Download The Stand Alone Version of CW Shredder,Spybot, AdAware, (Links at the bottom of my message) If you have them allready make sure they are up to date.


You may want to print this out
Unplug the internet from your computer
Reboot To Safe Mode (tap F8 on Startup)

Open up Hijack This and Place a check next to each of these and click Fix Checked.

Still In Safe Mode Delete all Temporary Internet Files, Cookies, Run CW Shredder, AdAware and Spybot, Delete what they find , Empty Recycle Bin.

Plug the internet back in and Reboot to normal mode and post a new log..........Jim

Thanks for the quick reply. I followed the steps you recommended. Nothing showed up with CWshredder, Adaware, or Spybot (though I had already run them).

The 09 items for webzone were probably related to a tweak I had installed that allows one easily to add a web site to the trusted zone while IE settings normally are in highly secure mode. I "fixed" anyway as I can easily restore that feature.

The long list of 012 plugins all are related to a molecular viewing program called "chime".

When I visit "forums.tomcoyote.org", though, I'm still getting a request to open shdoccl.dll. So if that is spyware related, the culprit is still not gone. (This is on my Dell laptop. When I use my Dell desktop to visit that site, I get no such request).

If that is or is not spyware related, could you give me a clue of why such a request is coming? I have found out that shdoccl.dll is a "show document control library" and has something to do with the way various documents are displayed in windows. This file on my computer is 537 Kb and shows version 6.0.2900.2180, created 3/4/2002 and modified 8/4/2004. I also note that it says its internal name and original name is shdocvw.dll. I do have a file shdocvw.dll on my computer as well, version with creation date 8/27/2004 and modified date 3/30/2006. Its file size is 1458 Kb. The same dates and file sizes show for these two files on my desktop computer, which is not having this problem.

Your log looks ok. shdocvw.dll is a legit file and shouldnt be removed.

There have been alot of complaints about this file. Spyware is one culprit. Sometimes by removing Spyware fixes the problem, sometimes it doesn't.

Does it only occur when you visit Tom Coyote? It may have something to do with their website.

I just clicked Tom Coyote(I am a member there) and got a quick peek at what you saw. The same thing happened to me. But I was able to get into the site.

I got a little note at the bottom of the screen that said shdocvw.dll or shdoccl.dll. It went by so fast I could hardly read it.

You can try EWido Security Suite and see if theres anything else on your computer. Its a good program to run.

Download and Run Ewido Security suite

Run Ewido:
Click on scanner
Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
NOTE: During some scans with ewido it is finding cases of false positives.
You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one.
If ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
DO NOT select "Perform action on all infections"
If you are unsure of any entry found select none for now.
When the scan is finished, click the Save report button at the bottom of the screen.
Save the report to your desktop
Close Ewido

So hopefully I'm okay. I also tried changing the myriad of internet settings to the same as on my desktop, but that doesn't make the dll request go away. (If I say no, I still can access the web site).

Thanks for your suggestions. All of this began a few days ago when I was getting an unusual hang-up of the browser during a post operation to a web site. I was on-line through a wireless DSL airport router, and when the size of the text file got beyond a certain size (one line difference), the post would not complete, I got about a one minute delay, then a request from the web site (or from somewhere) to open shdoccl.dll. Interestingly if I first logged on to a vpn network (still via the DSL router), the post worked regardless of the file size. The programmer behind the web site suggested a possible spyware problem, hence the search on the dll file and the discovery of this forum.

I also posted on TomCoyote since that is where HijackThis suggested, and that's when I noted the same shdoccl.dll request.

However, I'm becoming convinced my original problem related somehow to packet handling and perhaps some packets getting dropped when coming directly from the DSL router, or the inability of the router to properly sort out the responses from the web site, rather than a hijack. I don't understand much about routers, packets, etc--all a big black box mystery.

In any event it looks like my laptop has gotten cleaned up in the process.

Yea Your Ewido log looks ok, only a few things. I dont think its much to worry about. Maybe Tom Coyote has some suggestions.........Jim
