My wife's laptop has been battling hotsearchbar since October 2005. We seemed to be able to remove it with Ad-Aware and SpyBot, but no longer. I'm now using those with AntiVir, TrendMicro, ccshredder, and Ewido. Same ol' story: SpyBot intends to remove it next reboot, but doesn't.

Can't we arrange a class-action suit of the Hotsearchbar creators? I'd like to be reimbursed for the lost hours I've spent trying to remove it.

I've got HiJack This in c:\hgt, and I've run it. Here's the log:

Thanks!!!

I couldn't find any vaekm.exe file to delete.

In safe mode, I ran HJT, and checked off the indicated items. Then I ran CCleaner, CWShredder, AdAware and SpyBot. SpyBot again found HotSearchBar.

Here's the HJT file before rebooting:

Looks better, Still a ways to go, vaekm.exe has been removed from your log. One of the Spyware programs must have got it.

Download and Run Ewido Security suite(Make sure its up to date)

http://download.ewido.net/ewido-setup.exe

Run Ewido:
Click on scanner
Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
NOTE: During some scans with ewido it is finding cases of false positives.
You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one.
If ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
DO NOT select "Perform action on all infections"
If you are unsure of any entry found select none for now.
When the scan is finished, click the Save report button at the bottom of the screen.
Save the report to your desktop
Close Ewido

Post a new HijackThis log along with the Ewido log you saved.

Make sure when make a new HijackThis log that you are in Normal Mode It seems to show me more........Jim

Thanks!

1st, a question: in the laptop's c:\WINDOWS folder, we find these folders:

$MSI31NtUninstallKB893803v2$
$NtUninstallKB833680$
$NtUninstallKB835409$
$NtUninstallKB835732$
$NtUninstallKB842733$
$NtUninstallKB873339$
. . . etc. about 40 of 'em.

The folder icons are shaded, as if they're hidden files. Each has different stuff in it, all have a folder spuninst.

We've never seen this stuff before, and suspect it's some junk. Cause for concern?
_______________________________

I have internet access disabled on the laptop, but since I downloaded Ewido three days ago, I didn't obtain a new update. I've been running Ewido daily, finding all kinds of malware.

Running Ewido, I got these:

One more question: when I run SpyBot, at the bottom of the little window, lots of apparent site or program names flash, including:

CoolWWWSearch
PartySluts
TangoDialer
TeenXXX
XXX Adult

We've never (knowingly) visited any of these. Do these appear because they're being found on the harddrive, or is SpyBot simply looking for them?

Yea you have a tough one here.

Unplug the internet from your computer
Reboot To Safe Mode (tap F8 on Startup)

Open up Hijack This and Place a check next to each of these and click Fix Checked.

O2 - BHO: CFG32S - {7564B020-44E8-4c9b-A887-C6EC41AC67DA} - C:\WINDOWS\cfg32r.dll
O2 - BHO: Scaggy Insert - {C68AE9C0-0909-4DDC-B661-C1AFB9F59898} - C:\WINDOWS\cfg32o.dll

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [ceyyn] C:\WINDOWS\System32\gqngmp.exe reg_run

Still In Safe Mode Delete all Temporary Internet Files, Cookies, Run CW Shredder, AdAware and Spybot, Delete what they find , Empty Recycle Bin.

Plug the internet back in and Reboot to normal mode.

Run this program next

Download Brute Force Uninstaller to your C:\

http://www.merijn.org/files/bfu.zip

Unzip it to a folder of its own (C:\BFU). So BFU should be on your root. In most cases this is C:\
Download qoofix.bat (rightclick on this link and choose save as)
Place qoofix.bat in your C:\BFU - folder. (Important!)
Doubleclick qooFix.bat, Close all browsers and explorer folders.
Choose option 1 (Qoolfix autofix) and follow the prompts.
Please be patient, it will take about five minutes.
After the PC has restarted please post another hijackthis log.........Jim

Followed your directions - a few glitches.

When I ran Spybot the 1st time, HotSearchBar was gone, as were all other malware.

I was unable to download qoofix.bat - kept getting "File Not Found." So, I ran BFU and entered qoofix.bat as a "Script File to Execute." It seemed to find nothing.

Running SpyBot again after running BFU, HotSearchBar had returned. So I ran HJT again, and found 04 - KKCU\..\Run:[ceyyn] C:\WINDOWS\System32\gqngmp.exe reg_run had reappeared. So, I told HJT to fix it again: now it's gone, but SpyBot continues to find HotSearchBar.

In a positive note, annoying/disruptive popups seems to have disappeared.

My current HJT printout:

Reboot to Safe Mode

Need to search your computer for a possible hidden file.

1. Hit the Start button,

2. Click Search

3. Click All Files and Folders

4.Scroll Down to More Advanced Options and Click it.

5.Scroll Down from there and there should be 3 little boxes to check.

1. Search System Folders
2. Search Hidden Files and Folders
3. Search Subfolders.

6.Place a check in each of those boxes and the do another search of your computer for

hvlowuw.exe

If found Delete that file.

Still In Safe Mode Open up Hijack This and Place a check next to each of these and click Fix Checked.

O23 - Service: hpdj - Unknown owner - C:\DOCUME~1\Steff\LOCALS~1\Temp\hpdj.exe (file missing)

Reboot to Normal Mode

Download and run CCleaner as the Temp folders should be cleaned out periodically as installation programs and hijack programs leave a lot of junk there. Theres also a guided tour to get familiar with the program

http://www.ccleaner.com/

Then reboot to let it clean out what it found.

Post a new HijackThis Log in Normal Mode. Thanks........Jim

Thanks, Jim, for hanging in here with me. . .

hvlowuw.exe was not found. (But, check out line F2 in the HJT log below.)

Line 023 fixed.

I've been using CCleaner regularly.

Spybot ran automatically when I rebooted in Normal Mode, and HotSearchBar was still there.

Then I did another HJT; the log:

Yes its that F2 that bothers me. I dont want to have HijackThis remove that entry because userinit.exe is a good file.

How is it running right now?

I need to ask someone if its safe to remove that entry using HijackThis. Dont remove it until I find out.........Jim :eww

. . . it's been running rather well for the last few days. Popups are very infrequent. I still worry about the resistance of HotSearchBar to being removed, but for now, it seems to be OK.

Maybe, one busy-free weekend, I'll just backup everything my wife needs, wipe the harddrive clean, and reinstall Windows. For now, I appreciate your guidance!

Remove in Safe Mode

F2 - REG:system.ini: UserInit=userinit.exe,hvlowuw.exe

Post a new log after you delete that entry and let me know how its running..........Jim

I've run into similar problems before. You have a reloader that is opening after boot, dropping the nasty file and disappearing. You need a program that show's startup programs and maybe a process viewer. the one I use gives good info about what's running and it's called "process viewer" HAH! Got them at the shop. I'll post links tomorrow if still needed. This is the hardest game I play. I love it even though it frustrates me at times.
C:\WINDOWS\System32\EZSP_PX.EXE what is this? enne good?
