The latest trend is downloadable music. They are not as concerned with music quality as much as the price.

trading songs over instant messanger is popular too, as well as free

IO,
I can get AAC, and Lossless on the OLD internet...And Quality?? what EVEr you are willing to DL, for the TIME spent, I WOULD NOT do it on dial up.
Or should we teach the young folk about it.. But, If I do that, then it MAY be closed down.

trading on AIM (msn etc.) is the best way to do it I think, it just is tough to get everything you may want from your friends if you are looking for something obscure.

No, no noo..
IRC, and newsgroups are the OLD internet, and havnt changed much.
BUT, you must be very careful, as there are bots and virus out there that can kill your machine.
MSN, YAHOO, and the rest are convienent, but not quite are thorugh, and NOT anonomous.
I likw the USERGROUPS best, as there is music from around the world, and its anonmous.. you need a few programs and scources to get started, but its VERY good.

I agree that using instant messaging programs to trade music and albums have been popular. However, many teenagers are ignorant to the fact that doing such things are actually illegal. There are those that know that it is illegal to trade music but they choose to ignore the warnings given by music companies. They have a feeling of "They're never going to catch me". This leads to a more rampant amount of sharing of music. This, in turn, deprives the artist of earnings through royalties. If it continues this way, I fear the day where no artist would want to create any more music.

amz,

Then compare that with the Royalties that are being GIVEN.
those that make the MOST money are the corps, and the CEO, not the group.
this is NOT a 60/40 share, this is a 90/10 share.
When they could go independent distribution and HIT more markets, insted of THOSE decided by CORPS. WHICH will kill you(the corps) if they DONT like you, or are JUST LAZY..
Using independent Internet distribution you can HIT the world, and giving samples can give you TONS of sales.
