View Full Version : Need help with spyware. Hijackthislog Included!
Hello there. Someone here at my office decided to hop on the internet one night and completely screw my machine up. I'm pretty familiar with hijackthis, and can usually find the bad stuff to remove, but anyway. I cannot seem to get rid of this file c:\windows\system32\iniwin32.dll. Adaware also cannot remove the file. I've used Killbox, and no avail with that either. Here is my HT log. Please help!

Your copy of HijackThis needs to be in a folder of it's own. When HJT fixes anything, it makes backups of the original files in the folder it is in. For this reason it cannot be run from a Zip file or from Temporary folders because the backups will be deleted. Having the backups could be VITAL to restoring your system if something went wrong in the FIX process!
1. Please go to you're 'My Documents' folder, right-click and select 'New > Folder' then name the folder 'HJT'.
2. Copy and paste HijackThis.exe to the new folder.
3. Download The Stand Alone Version of CW Shredder,Spybot, AdAware, (Links at the bottom of my message) If you have them allready make sure they are up to date.
You may want to print this out
Unplug the internet from your computer
Reboot To Safe Mode (tap F8 on Startup)
Delete this file
Delete these Files and or Folders
C:\WINDOWS\system32\vawso.exe
Still In Safe Mode Open up Hijack This and Place a check next to each of these and click Fix Checked.

Plug the internet back in and Reboot to normal mode and post a new log..........Jim
Ok, firstly, I could not delete that file. Even using Killbox.
Secondly, I had an error popup while trying to remove the items from Hijackthis. This is what the dialog box said:
An unexpected error has occurred at procedure: modBackup_MakeBackup(sItem=O20 - AppInit_DLLs: iniwin32.dll)
Error #5 - Invalid procedure call or argument
Please email me at merijn@spywareinfo.com, reporting the following:
* What you were trying to fix when the error occurred, if applicable
* How you can reproduce the error
* A complete HijackThis scan log, if possible

Lets try another program.
Download and Run Ewido Security suite
http://download.ewido.net/ewido-setup.exe
Run Ewido:
Click on scanner
Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
NOTE: During some scans with ewido it is finding cases of false positives.
You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one.
If ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
DO NOT select "Perform action on all infections"
If you are unsure of any entry found select none for now.
When the scan is finished, click the Save report button at the bottom of the screen.
Save the report to your desktop
Close Ewido
Post a new HijackThis log along with the Ewido log you saved.........Jim
If you continue to have problems you may want to contact the people on that link.
merijn@spywareinfo.com
they also may have some answers.........Jim
Jim,
Hey! I appreciate the help and prompt replies to my posts. I am terribly sorry I have yet to reply. I was not contacted about a reply to my post, and have just been so busy I haven't been able to check the forums for a reply.
I am about to leave the office for the night, so I will run this new software and post some new logs first thing tomorrow morning.
Again, thank you very much for helping me resolve my issue, and please accept my appologies for letting this topic slide away.
I'll be posting new logs tomorrow morning. Have a great evening!
-Jon

This is bad, Do you have any AntiVirus programs on here?
I dont see one on your log. Download AVG AntiVirus
http://forums.digitaltrends.com/showthread.php?t=5583
Once downloaded, Update it, Sometimes when you download it its not up to date.
Then Run it. Reboot and post a new log........Jim :eww
Jim,
Thanks for the prompt reply. I'm downloading AVG right now, and I will run it once it is installed. I'm going to try to sneak out of the office early today (shhh!!), so I probably won't post a new log until Monday morning. :-)
Thanks for all of your help.
Have a great weekend!

Looks like we got some of it. Its coming along. :thumb
You may want to print this out.
Please download E2TakeOut by RubbeR DuckY from here:
http://www.malwarebytes.org/E2TakeOut.zip
Extract the file to your Desktop
Double click E2TakeOut.exe
Click the Begin Removal button
Wait until the program is finished scanning
Once done, it will produce a popup stating that the infection has been found and you need to reboot you computer to complete the removal
Reboot your computer
Once your computer has rebooted E2TakeOut will open and produce a report
Please copy/paste that report into your next reply along with a new HijackThis log.........Jim
Jim,

Looks like we got it. How is it running?........Jim :vivi
Jim,
It seems to be working much better. Haven't noticed any problems. Thanks a ton for your help. If I were rich I'd paypal you $100,000,000...haha.
On a side note, just before I ran that E2TakeOut program. I used HT to remove the entry for iniwin32.dll once more. But this time I set HT to not create a backup, and it successfully removed the entry, rather than giving me the error message. Just wanted to throw that out there if anyone is having problems with this nasty little bug.
Again, Jim, I'd like to thank you very much kind sir, for all of your help and dedication in solving my issue. I am forever in your debt.
Have a great day!
-Jon

Glad to help, Follow the instructions below to help it stay clean. Also keep other employees from messing with your computer. :eww
Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:
Use an AntiVirus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.
See this link for a listing of some online & their stand-alone antivirus programs:
Virus, Spyware, and Malware Protection and Removal Resources (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=405)
Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.
Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over. I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.
For a tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:
Understanding and Using Firewalls (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/index.php?showtutorial=60)
Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.
Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software.
A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
Using Spybot - Search & Destroy to remove Spyware , Malware, and Hijackers (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/index.php?showtutorial=43)
Install Ad-Aware - Install and download Ad-Aware. ou should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software in conjunction with Spybot.
A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
Using Ad-aware to remove Spyware, Malware, & Hijackers from Your Computer (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/index.php?showtutorial=48)
Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.
A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/index.php?showtutorial=49)
Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.
Glad I was able to help.......Jim
