Just to bring this back to life for anybody that's interested.

The Canon 350D XT or the 400D XTi series are great cameras to start with, stunning pictures, but be warned, with a DSLR there is a learning curve.

If you want a more professional body, look at the used 20D 30D market, these are going for great deals, the image quality is no different to the 350D 400d, but the ease of use and handling is fantastic.

although older cameras, don't be fooled, the results can be mind blowing.

If you are happy with compacts, stick with them, and if you want an all round good guy, Google the Canon G9 or soon to be released newer version.

If I was to buy a compact, it would be the G9.
