Download The Stand Alone Version of CW Shredder,Spybot, AdAware, (Links at the bottom of my message) If you have them allready make sure they are up to date.

You may want to print this out
Unplug the internet from your computer
Reboot To Safe Mode (tap F8 on Startup)

Delete this file
Delete these Files and or Folders

Still In Safe Mode Open up Hijack This and Place a check next to each of these and click Fix Checked.

Still In Safe Mode Delete all Temporary Internet Files, Cookies, Run CW Shredder, AdAware and Spybot, Delete what they find , Empty Recycle Bin.

Plug the internet back in and Reboot to normal mode and post a new log..........Jim

Hi Jim. Thank you for your quick reply. I did exactly as you said but still had a few problems and a couple of questions.

First. Should I also delete the MRU list that comes up when I complete the Ad-aware scan, and what are MRU's?

Secondly. When I completed all the steps and finished the Spybot scan, the "Hotsearchbar" thing would still not delete (prog. asked if it could try again at startup, still didn't work)

Thirdly. My wife has been having serious problems accessing yahoo (at all, not to e-mail server or yahoo main page), could these things be related, or does yahoo have a seriously stupid server?

Lastly. After doing all the steps I didn't get a chance to post this log until after my wife had run Spybot again. It showed 12 things to delete, of which 11 were cleaned (again Hotsearchbar wouldn't go away). The list included:

With Teatimer running sometimes the fixes will not work

We need to disable TeaTimer as it may interfere with the fixes that we need to make.
Run Spybot-S&D
Go to the Mode menu, and make sure "Advanced Mode" is selected
On the left hand side, choose Tools -> Resident
Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts
Restart your computer.

Reboot To Safe Mode (tap F8 on Startup)

Open up Hijack This and Place a check next to each of these and click Fix Checked.

Run the Spyware programs again. Then post a new log.

After all of the fixes are complete it is very important that you enable Real-time Protection again.

The MRU list is the Most Recently Used list and isn't dangerous - it's used to make it easier to reopen programs/files that you recently used. It is deemed to be a possible source of tracking information - that is, to enable someone to track what you've done on your computer.

Hi Jim. Following all your instructions, I still ran into the problem that Spybot couldn't get rid of the Hotsearchbar file either on the first run, or on the run after a reboot.

I'm wondering, does it matter if I run all of these programs at the same time or seperately?

Is it possible that the slow running of yahoo/lack of access to yahoo is related to this?

And finally, when I turned off the teatimer (which I have turned back on), it never prompted me at all. Although I did shut it down and start it up again to see if the change took effect.

Run the Spyware programs one at a time. Your log looks better now after disabling teatimer.

Also on Spybot its possible to have a false positive on Hotsearchbar, that could be the reason it continues to show on Spybot. read here.

Here is another fix for Hotsearchbar from another member of the site.

1. Start Command Prompt in the Accessories menu of your Start Menu.
2. Type in: (c:/windows/system32/regsvr32.exe /u winhot32.dll) EXACTLY as it's seen inside the parenthesis
3. You should get a system message saying that winhot32.dll has be unregistered
4. Open Internet Explorer to find HotSearchBar no longer there. You're done!
