i downloaded some movies that are avi files and was able to play them on my Dell computer with XP until just recently. now when i try, i get a message saying windows media player has encountered a problem and has to close. i get the same message on real player and on my software that converts movies for ipod use. i moved to same files to other computers and they play fine. i have tried upgrading my WMP to no avail. What could possibly be the problem? :crazy

Get VLC Media Player, it is by FAR the best player out there. It will play any kind of movie file basically, give it a try and let me know how it works out for u, btw its free.

My only suggestions is to try and reinstall DivX and WMP on the system. If those do not work, then I would recommend going into your folder options and file types and changing the file association so that .avi files work with your preferred player. I would also check your MIME settings. I think the reason why they will not play is because they are not being associated correctly.

Im thinking there is a DRM error.

When did you last scan your system and with WHAT programs?

what type of sites did you get them from? If we had a sample it might be easier to find out why
