I don't usually discuss music but I just read Brad Delp, the original lead singer of the rock band Boston, died today at age 55. I always really liked Boston, especially early Boston. They had a unique sound. Some of their later albums were way over produced (I guess that's what happens when you spend eight years making one album) but I still liked most of their stuff. The band has always been riddled with legal problems which kept them from capitalizing on their early success and reaching their full potential. Anyway, I hate to hear one of the "voices" I listened to growing up passing away at a relatively young age. I saw them in concert a few years ago and they (and he) sounded great.

I also read today that Eddie Van Halen is going into rehab. The article (which I'm linking to below) had a picture of him from a couple of weeks ago. Man, he looks terrible. Like a homeless Charles Manson. You can tell he needs help. His teeth look like they're rotting away which I think is a sign of Crystal Meth addiction (not to start speculation since I haven't heard what he's going in for and I think most people just think it's alcohol.) I just happened to have read an interview with Sammy Hagar recently in which he talks about how crazy Eddie had become. That's why he left the band again. Michael Anthony now plays in Sammy's band as well.

Heart attack is what most speculation points to.

Heart attack is what most speculation points to.

As you've probably heard by now Delp's death was a suicide. What a waste.

Here's a nice write up about him from Boston's Tom Scholz:

Former Boston guitarist Barry Goudreau is streaming a song on his homepage that he recorded with Delp. The lyrics were written by Delp and the music is by Goudreau. It's not a great song but it's not too bad and it is certainly fitting:

Edit: The Goudreau site no longer streams the song. As I'm sure the Boston site will eventually go back to normal operation as well making these links irrelevant to my post.

I don't know why I keep searching out information on this Delp thing. I did (do) like Boston but for some reason after all you read about him and what kind of person he was I just find it so odd and tragic that he committed suicide. I know it might have just been clinical depression, which sadly, can be treated with medication if the person seeks help. But it definitely seemed like people thought of him as a really nice and happy guy. He was supposed to get married this summer.

People are already lining up to blame Tom Scholtz for driving him to it, which is silly. I think Scholtz is notorious for being difficult to work with and has sued just about everyone he ever came in contact with except Delp but, give me a break, if he bothered Delp that much then Delp would just walk away.

Anyway, here's a downloadable tribute to Delp broadcast by WZLX in Boston (it's two parts and quite long if you listen to all the music). By the way, the last song of the tribute is the song originally streamed at the site I linked to in a my previous post:
