I submit the following question to obtain confirmation of what I think I already know but will appreciate learning for certain:
Multiple software (free and shareware) are available to edit .mp3 files directly without converting back and forth from .wav to .mp3. It appears that all are limited to cutting and joining .mp3 files without the additional features available with Pro Tools, Adobe, and even the open source Audacity designed for .wav files.
Have I missed any such software that performs such tasks while working directly with an .mp3 file?
I have a feeling that I have not; and, furthermore, I have a feeling it is because .mp3 files utilize frames. How right or wrong am I?
Many thanks for the information.
I know that many tools for editing audio have MP3 plugins available, but they usually are an additional install to get the functionality, and many cost money due to licensing. Typically how the MP3 codec is licensed is that it's free to use for playback (decoding), but costs to allow encoding in an application.
I did a quick google search (http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=edit+mp3+files&btnG=Google+Search) and got a lot of results for software that allows editing of MP3 files.
Here is another google search (http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=edit+mp3+files+free&btnG=Search) for free Mp3 editing software, again lots of results.
Other than that, I dont have any experience doing it.

Thanks for your reply, Dang. I, too, am aware of the MP3 codec plugins available for the various audio editors. The problem, from my perspective at least, is that these editors first convent an .mp3 file to a .wav file for editing then following editing convert it back into .mp3. All this converting back and forth results in a final file that is severely deprecated. The original .mp3 file was greatly "attached" as it was transformed into an .mp3 only to be followed by added re-encoding that truly adds 'insult to injury.' It is for this reason that I am seeking software that directly edits .mp3 files without any re-encoding. Unfortunately all that I have located - your great Google links notwithstanding - only cut and paste without the equalization, flange, reverb, etc. features available for editing .wav files. The framing aspect of the .mp3 format leads me to believe that this extended style of .mp3 editing is not yet available.
Since I'm interested in this not only from a pragmatic perspective, but also digital theory, I will continue researching the issue and will report back to this Forum should I locate some definitive answers.

I use Adobe Audition. I'm not sure what you are trying to do with your MP3s. But this program does alot of different things. Converting, editing, equalize.etc........Jim
