Do you have a 2.4GHz cordless phone in the house? When we tested our linksys wireless router, the cordless phone interupted the wireless router and so did running the shower Dont ask why) which was on the other side of thw wall.

have you grounded the metal frames, it will reduce background noise. As the current tech with phones and cell phones is 2.3-3.4 ghz...
Also look into shielding the house in the areas around antenas, aluminum foil will work, or a matalic paints.
experiment, take a square of foil and see what happens when you are between 2 stations with it.
There is also one other DIRTY trick. take a short wire and wrap it around the antena, and set it in a COMMON ground(dont go thru any electrical(if possible)), this will close the loop on the antena and you may increase bandpass. Try the Water pipe, or see if you can make it connect all rooms. Noise is limited to what you put on it(refrigerator, radios, anything you GROUND to it).

I got around the wireless phone issue by selling my really new spread spectrum phone for a very old single channel wireless phone. Phone was on channel 6, Made wireless channel 8. Worked like a champ. Don't have the heat problem either. I'm using standard linksys equipment

I have not been impressed with Netgear either. I notice they get great reviews too but I cannot figure out why. I think their tech support is terrible and I think their manuals are pretty bad. Never mind that they usually do not support the latest OS.

You could get around this with a normal 900MHz with digital spread spectrum phone. It has great range and will not interfere with your wireless network.

Another option would be for the new 802.11a wireless networks to come out, their data range will be like 5 times great and they are somewhere near the 5GHz range I beleive.
