Blu-Ray Standard Looks to Make DVD Obsolete:

The only thing that surprises me about this is I thought they would replace CD technology first. We have been listening to CD's for a little over 20 years.

I find it hard to believe DVDs are going to get phased out so quickly. Unless they made it so that DVDs and BR DVDs could be read on the same system, because DVDs are just TOO NEW.

(backwards compat, not upwards ;) )

I agree. From what Dan and I could tell, the Bule Ray players are NOT backwards compatible with the older DVD technology. You would need a second laser to read the older DVD's. It also looks like the Blue Ray machines will be sold at a premium when they are first introduced, despite a low manufacturing cost. I am sure there will be some compatible players in the future but I am predicting that won't happen right away. The players we saw at CES were not backwards compatible....major bummer. It would be nice if DVD-A or SACD qould hurry up and replace current CD technology....the sound quality is a million times better in my opinion.
