A better question is what makes a website a portal type. I would say while this has a number of similar features as a portal, I don't think that it has all of them. my.yahoo.com is the best known portal. It has many different features that allow the user to customize the content and the look of web page. For a number of many users this serves as their starting page in whatever browser they are using.
