I don't think it plays HDCD or SVCD.

Yamaha patented PlayXchange
DTS and Dolby Digital Decoder
DVD Audio, DVD Video, VCD and CD Disc Playback Compatibility

I found a bunch that are a single disk only. How many friggin DVD-A or SVCD disks do you have anyways? You could always just use this as your dvd player / enhanced audio player until one is released. Besides you are going to pay top dollar for having both types of audio playback. We came to the conclusion that DVD-A is the superior of the two technologies. SVCD or HDCD might not be around much longer, but what do we know :D

Here is a list that I found. Post more links if you can find them

well, alot of music i enjoy is being re-released on dvda now which is a definite bonus as my receiver supports the format. as for hdcd, if you've ever heard tool's lateralus through a good reference or monitor system using hdcd play back, that's more than enough justifaction for a player (i have a single disc unit at the moment) :D

I'm probably going to go with the yamaha unit since what i'm looking for seems to rare still (which is silly) and i can get a trade in on my cdc-585.

ed://svcd isn't something i'm concerned about, my pc is routed through my receiver and tv via svid and component with toslink for the audio, with an ati video card (far superior setup to what a dvd player will offer).

Question: Is there a price range you are trying to stay within? There are plenty of players on the market with the features you want.

i'd say under a thousand ideally.

You mentioned HDCD compatible. What about SACD compatibility?

The format's too young for me to give it any consideration, but players that do everything are starting to roll out so it doesn't hurt.

Well I would recommend getting a player that supports both since a true winner has not been announced. Besides, with Sony backing SACD, you know it will be around for a while. Just look at the mini-disc and memory stick.

Players/brands I would recommend are:

- Onkyo DV-SP800 $999
THX Ultra certified
plays DVD-Video, DVD-R & DVD-RW, and Video CD
plays SACD, DVD-Audio, CD, CD-R & CD-RW, and MP3 CD-R & CD-RW

- Pioneer Elite DV-47A
multichannel SACD and DVD-A playback.

- Denon DVD-1600
DVD-Audio/Video Progressive Scan Player • Progressive Scan featuring DCDi by Faroudja decoding engine • DVD-Audio with Bass Management, 100Hz crossover point • Plays CD/VCD/CD-R/CD-RW Discs, *DVD-R Conditionally • MP3 Decoder for encoded CD-R/RW Discs

I personally like the Pioneer and the Onkyo because they support both formats and include bass management. A lot of the lower end models do not support bass management. The Onkyo is THX certified if that means anything to you. I like the fact that the Onkyo supports DVD-R,RW formats and MP3 formats, it truly seems to be a versatile product which will last for a while.

Just remember, 720P DVD players will be hitting the market this year albiet at a premium price, and with the way product lifecycles work, do not expect a combo DVD-A/DVD player unit with 720P for at least a year. I would shop around on the Onkyo and see what you can get. Besides, have you ever heard of any complaints on the Onkyo brand? They are far and between.
