My windows 98 cd drive has dissapeared

I have tweaked with autoexec and config but i dont think they are the problem

Config.sys .....

DEVICE=C:\DOS\SETVER.EXE
DEVICE=C:\DOS\HIMEM.SYS
device = atapicd.sys
DOS=HIGH
COUNTRY=044,,C:\DOS\COUNTRY.SYS
FILES=30
STACKS=9,256

Autoexec.bat .....

C:\DOS\SMARTDRV.EXE /X
mscdex.exe /d:cd003
@ECHO OFF
PROMPT $p$g
PATH C:\WINDOWS;C:\DOS
SET TEMP=C:\DOS
MODE CON CODEPAGE PREPARE=((437) C:\DOS\EGA.CPI)
MODE CON CODEPAGE SELECT=437
KEYB UK,,C:\DOS\KEYBOARD.SYS

OK, a few more problams that might have caused it.

At startup it says

Failure to access code page font file.
Device error during select. Bad or missing keyboard definition file.

In system properties or (device manager) it has two warning signs next to these

-Hard Drisk controler;
Primary Bus Master IDE Controler (dual fifo)
Secondary Bus Master IDE Controler (dual fifo)

Please help

1. get rid of those config.sys and autoexec...
Those are for DOS BASE...

HOW old is the system.
how much HD space is availabe..

It sounds MORE like 1 of 2 problems...
The system is failing.. A good recovery and restart or the hardware is Dying..

What anti virus and Bot protection do you have?

the system is just a few months old. And the system is not connected to the internet. I have it on dual boot with XP.
XP finds the cd Drive.
I recon its the IDE Controler drivers
It has metres of space. Lots of it.
I cannot reinstall cos if i do that, my whole drive would have to get wiped because of setup issues which i have already gone through once but wont fix.

the CMOS is already updated and i have the mobo VIA 4 in 1 Driver (IDE Cable) installed. Maybe if i uninstall it and if that doesent work, re-install it.:cheers

Then the only options I can suggest is MOTHER BOARD drivers, and maybe a CMOS upgrade, then to find the proper drivers for Win98 to use those devices.

VIA chipsets are a pain.
you may have to make SURE its the one for win98...UNDER win98..Then you have to tell the system WHERE and what it is...its not fun.

Because my computer was dual boot with windows 98se and XP Pro.

I could read the cds with XP. I copied the relevant windows98 install files accross to hard drive from windows 98 cd.
I restarted to 98. Run the windows 98 setup from within windows 98. Took seconds to reinstall. Restarted windows, everything exactly as it was before install. And went on powredesk and cd drive is there again, i deleted autoexec and config again and all fine, thanks for help.
