I just bought a used Sony STR DE885 to use in a setup with component video DVD & cable in, and out to a Mitsubishi projector via VGA to component cable.
I can't get the Sony to output anything except composit video, the s-video and component outputs don't seem to work.
I know the s-video & component video stuff works when plugged into the projector directly, but the Sony just wont switch the signal and give me component out.
Is there something simple I am missing? I sure hope so. If someone knows the setting or any other issues that will solve/explain my problem it would be awsome.
Thanks
Justin

So when you say cable in, do you mean from your cable box into the receiver?
My guess is that you will not be able to use a VGA to component cable. I assume its component out of the receiver, and VGA into the projector? Does the projector not have component in?
Out of curiousity, what does your name/handle mean? Are you from Portland ORE?
justin,
Umm, many TV's need to be told WHERE the input is from...AUX 1, AUX 2, and so forth...
I had 1 flay panel TFT, that had 5 different inputs and you had to select WHICH was INPUTTING... the DVD was composite, the VCR was component.
Verry much fun.

Yep. I'm in Portland, well, the 'couve this moment
The Projector has 1 composit in, 1 S-video in & 2 VGA ins.
I am using a vga to component cable that works alone with all sources.
The Sony DE885 wont allow me to output either S-video or component video to my projector, only composit for some reason.
I have tried all the possible combinations & it is the reciever (or better yet, the operator of the reciever) is the problem.
Does anyone know how to tell the reciever (Sony DE885) to output other video sources (i.e. the S-video & component video out)?:eww

USER manual..
SO, the problem is that you are SENDING inputs to the SONY, and you cant change the OUTPUT from the sony to a better resolution output..
I DONT think this has the ability to CHANGE video from 1 format to another.
You only have 2 outputs for video. composite and S video(Monitor). THEn I see that it has 2 Bypass...Which only sends IN to OUT, and not much more.
I would suggest you run AUDIO to this unit, and VIDEO direct to the TV..

It won't even pass through component to component, or svideo to svideo. There has to be a setting on the reciever (that's what I keep telling myself).
As far as the audio to reciever & video to projector, thats, what I'm doing now.... It just bumms me out.
Thanks for the input.
Philips makes a A/V swicher that sold at many stores, about $50. That makes the signal work over from component/composite/svideo, to What EVER form you want.

hmm it could be a setting in the menu. Does the manual say anything?
