Hi, any suggestions on what free software i can put on a CD and boot my pc, to thoroughly clean it. I think this would probably be better than simply reformatting etc.
what do you mean CLEAN?
Erase EVERYTHING??
Look up NTF DOS...

I am using Registry Mechanic on my system. I run it after uninstalling software. It makes my system feel as fast as a format.

Yeh thanks after a Google i found what i needed on diskboot dot com or whatever, but i then found my original windows xp backup disks.
I just removed Norton anti virus after the reboot, because of the system drainage and it being expired. Now i have no detected virus protection, what programs would you recommend?

Hmm, what exactly does it do? Doe sit compress files , and delete unnecessary ones?

So, sometimes when you delete a program, or uninstall it, it will leave bits and pieces behind in the registry. All of those unused programs cause the registry to slow down. Reigstry Mechanic will delete the old program references, unused shortcuts etc, and even compress the registry so it speeds up your system. I use it about once a week.

Ok, thanks again. I Dl'ed the "PC tools anti virus" http://majorgeeks.com/downloads29.html
There are multiple options on "majorgeeks" alone that my decision was a bit unclear. What combination of pc protection tools will suffice? Obviously my objective is to keep my pc from being bogged down with too many resource hogging programs.
Thanks again.

If you want money to spend, then get trend micro.

If you mean anti virus I am using AVG anti virus but if you like you can try Award-winning Window Washer features a new interface and cleans more areas of your PC than ever before – including Mozilla and Firefox. Window Washer includes a bleach option for added security to make recovery of deleted files impossible. This enhanced version also cleans up hard disk freespace to remove evidence of your deleted files.
I always reformat my hard drive and re install every thing every year. Between reformats, I just defrag my hard drive monthly. I've been doing this for 7 years now for me this is better overall than just using registry optimizer or anything.

I use Registry Mechanic and defrag my drive often too. Seems to work for me so far.
