A friend of mine has a Xbox360 and i reall enjoy it but one day it froze on a halo and the RROD fried it. He has had 4 Xbox's fail to the RROD and he has had it only a year. His neighbor got one 2 weeks ago and it already has the RROD. This is obviously getting way out of hand. I saw a video in which a man fries an egg inside the Xbox and could even BOIL water...
There i also learned the towel trick. you wrap 3 towels all around you Xbox, take the HDD out and all the cords except power, and let sit for 20 minutes. Then cool for 20 and it works.
i'm on my 3rd xbox 360. My first didn't work out of the box. I had to return it. The second worked for about 7 months, then I got the red ring. Shipped it back to MS and they sent a refurbed one (which sucks, I was expecting a new one.) I can tell it's refurbed because the case is a bit scuffed up. The one I sent in was not.

i still really like the Xbox 360 its just a bit pricy with the wifi add-on and the HD DVD and then the price of online.
the online price is super cheap. it's like $50 a year for the gold membership.
Why bother getting the HD DVD add-on? Wi-fi add on a bit pricey. I'd look for a used one on craigslist or ebay, or even better yet just connect using the ethernet jack.

If i could use an ethernet jack i would....Unfortuantley saving 65 dollars a month is worth piggybacking internet from your neighbors for free. all we have is a Netgear Wireless USB adapter which gives are computer WiFi. This doesn't support ethernet. My PS3 works with the WiFi but it only has a 30 % signal strenght so it can be weak at times.
saving 780 bucks a year on internet feels good though.

I've been one of the lucky ones and havent experienced the RROD, but I also was warned ahead of time to make sure that the thing can "breathe" and to not have anything near the power supply.
So I have the box in a WELL ventilated area, and the power brick also in a wide open area. Does anyone know if the RROD is preventable besides good ventilation?
Ventilation definitely helps. The issue I hear is with the the motherboard or other card in the xbox cracking/warping due to heat, causing the solder points to break.
