I would appreciate if a moderator would sticky this.

I have fixed 2 HDD6330's using this method. It may work for other models as well.

1. On you computer, ensure that Philips Device Manager is running.
2. Turn your mp3 player on (it should freeze at the Loading or GoGear Screen).
3. Plug in the mp3 player to your USB/Charger cable (ensure it is connected to the USB port on your computer), and then perform a soft reset (Power switch down and Volume up button simultaneously).
4. Let go of the other buttons as soon as the player resets. Hold the Volume down button until the player comes on. The player will be recognized by Philips Device Manager and will report a problem (and will allow you to repair it). Windows will also recognize it as a Mass Storage Device.

Awesome... Thank you very much. I needed to see the video in order to do this. I tried twice just with the instructions and had no success.

After the soft reset and as soon as the player turns on, I press the Volume Down button (as on the video) and finally the computer recognized and repaired my GOGear!

Thanks a lot!

Glad it worked for you. Definitely shows that it wasn't a fluke. I wish I would have posted this when I first figured it out.

daqq,

My hdd6330 has been sitting on my bookcase for 18 months waiting for a fix on this! Your info, including the video, was perfect and my player is up and running now.

One small glitch, though, that I wanted to know if you have come across. When I connect via device manager, it tells me I am running FW version 1.2 (and the device confirms this.) It then prompts me disconnect the player to complete upgrade, but it NEVER upgrades the firmware. It goes through its little reboot process, but when I check the information setting, I still get FW version 1.2 on device, and when I reconnect to the PC, it again prompts me to upgrade my firmware.

I tried changing the name of the device file to HDD6330 (it currently reads HDD6320), but when I do that, it tells me files cannot be found. I changed it back and I still get the same thing over and over. :brick

I reinstalled via CD, then downloaded updates from phillips website into temp folders and installed those as well. Still, FW version 1.2 is on my player and cannot be upgraded when I connect to the PC.

Any ideas?

I had a similar problem with the firmware not updating via the device manager. To fix it I followed the procedure in this post: http://forums.digitaltrends.com/showthread.php?p=61684#post61684

That seemed to do the trick for me. Device manager has probably already downloaded the updated firmware (the default location on your computer would be C:\Program Files\Philips\Philips Device Manager\bin\Devices\HDD6320\Firmware)

Thanks for the reply, Ben.

After browsing my player, though, I do see a "Data" folder. All I have is the _System (which will not allow me to cut & paste the .ebn Font and FW files into it--says those files not recognized by player), the Font folder (empty), Firmware folder (also empty), tmp folder (empty), and the standard media Folders (camera, playlists, recordings, et al.)

I can add a new folder, but it will not let me rename it Data, so it looks like without a copy of an actual Data folder, I cannot upgrade my firmware.

Does this ring true with what you have found?

Thanks, in advance.

Chris

Actually, i just figured it out. I went under the Program Files/Phillips/Phillips Device Manager/bin/Devices/HDD6320 and copied the new FW and Font .ebn files into their respective files.

As soon as I reconnected, the DM gave me the message to reboot player, I did, and now both the player and PC indicate that FW version 2.1 is running.

All the folders on the player (_System, Firmware, and Font) are empty, and there is still no Data file... which may be why the player keeps telling me my update is ready to install even though I am running the latest update.

Great info! Beats my method of cloning the HD. I will still continue to host the image file for those that may have a crashed HD. Did you stumble across this button combination? I searched high and low and never once came across this button combination. Good to know...

1. use your music program to look at the device, NOT windows...you may see something.
2. have you tried a full format, and reinstall of the device? Use the music program, it should format it and reinstall the folders.
3. do you have the driver for it?
