This message is about how to copy data files using a Philips GoGear mp3 player. And a problem with doing so. According to the manual for the HDD6330 6320 and 6335, "You can use your player to store and carry data files by copying data files into the Data folder of your player via Windows Explorer."
To do so Windows Media Player 10 may need to be on your computer. If WMP -11 is already there, you may need to uninstall it plus one other WMP-11 program and then install WMP-10. (It may just be that when you first link a GoGear with a computer that WMP-10 is necessary.)
Anyway if things are working properly there will be a data sub-file under the Philips GoGear directory in Windows Explorer and that is where the files (are supposed to) go.
I have a Philips GoGear 6330 MP3Player and I have had the same problem with 2 of them. When I copy files to the GoGear, the firmware changes the date modified of all the files to one date in the distant past. The data modfied does not change when uploading from the GoGear: it remains that same weird date.
And so my PhilipsGoGear cannot really be used to "store and carry data files." I spent hours on the phone with Philips tech support and they had the same problem with their HDD6330s. But since the manual does not say the correct date will be preserved, it does what it is supposed to do. And so they say they do not need to fix the problem.
Now it seems to me if the date of a file gets changed, there must be commands in the software to do so. On my current GoGear the modified dates on the recently downloaded data files now all say December 2006. If I copy files a week later, the date of all the copied files will be a week later than the date of all the files I copied the week before. When I check the current date and time feature on my GoGear it is the current date and time so that's not the cause of this problem.
I could not find anything about this data/date issue on the Digital Trends forums but I am guessing the problem is not mine alone. Has anyone found a solution? Does anyone have a GoGear that does not have the problem?
I have tried downloading with different computers with different Windows OS and the problem is the same.
Thanks for reading this. I hope someone can help.
