One of Nintendo's greatest innovators, the late Gunpei Yokoi, is to be honoured with a special lifetime achievement award at the Game Developers Choice Awards, held at GDC early next month. Yokoi-san is credited with the creation of several of Nintendo's most successful and revolutionary products, including the Game & Watch, the GameBoy and its successor, the GameBoy Pocket, but perhaps his biggest single contribution to gaming is the cross-shaped directional pad (D-pad) seen on almost every game controller in the world.

Was the Gameboy the first handheld system of this type on the market? I remember the Virtual boy and I am not surpised it failed. I wonder if Yokoi-san resigned from Nintendo because of the failure of the Virtual Boy? Did he lose honor or something?
