I am upgrading this guys system, which really means throwing in a CD-R/RW and sound card and 20 Gig HD. Since he has a POS and can't afford a new one, this is the best I can do.

I got everything in there, jumpers on the HD is correct, two CD drives may not be. When I plug everything in and turn it on the monitor says "No Sigal" like I don't have the cable plugged in. It could be that is BIOS is slower than my grandma, but I doubt it. I tried a different card in the same PCI slot and same deal. The funny thing is that I was able to boot it just fine a week or so ago. Now I am wondering what I should do from here. You guys got any ideas? I was going to try a different PCI bus just for ****s and Giggles. Everything powers up just fine. The HD spins like it is going through a boot, but I can't see anything!

Try a different pci slot (his graphics card is pci, not agp? ouch....)
also, make sure the card is inserted completely into the slot.

do you get any beeps on startup?
Is there an onboard video controller?

Dude he doesn't even HAVEa AGP slot. No beeps, no onboard video controller. I am almost positive that I put the card in right :)

I didn't change the video card. I didn't even take the thing out and it gave me that error.

The BIOS may default to AGP on start up after a reconfig. Search for this setting. Also check the aperture setting as sometimes it will go to default on an older machine. You can try resetting the PNP OS setting to yes for win 98 and above and reset configuration data to yes and restart. this should resolve any IRQ or config issues you may have. Proable a conflict.

Clean the cable connectors to the card. Check the cable to the back of the monitor fully inserted.

DID you configure his BIOs.

You have NOt stated WHO made the comp, Dell, HP, Gateway.
DELL, makes ALOT of systems that can NOT be upgraded.

You have 2 CD drives? ON the SAME channel? And the HD on the other?

WHAT onboard hardware is there. Video, audio, modem??

PLZ say its a clone.

LISTEN to the comp, when its FIRST turned on, check to see if FANS are working. PS may have died on you. TO much power output.
The Power supplys on ALOT of MADE systems as JUST enough to make them work. And after along time, they are only working BARELY. Adding the dives, may have pushed it OVER the edge.

Its a Gateway. I know how to hook thing up, or at least I did. If I would have messed with it more I would have probably figured it out. What was wrong was that I had the IDE cables in backwards. I thought the one notch on one of the cables was an indication associated with the missing pin on board, but after looking at another board I saw that the notch should go down.

The problem that I am having now is that it won't go into the BIOS, I hit F1, wait like 15 minutes and nothing happens. I am thinking of taking the battery off and putting it back so as to try to jumpstart it.

BETTEr indicator is the RED side of cable goes to PIN 1 on the device and on the Mobo.

Try esc, key to get to bios.

F1 goes to bios, but it doesn't make it there. I know about the red stripe, but that doesn't seem to apply for when u plug into the mobo.

Check the Master slave ID..
Also try removing LAST insert hardware. See if it will do the bios, if it does, and everything is AOK, BAD drive.

What is the most infuriating?
Is HOW to use, and get into the bios. EVERY manufactour has a different way to get into it. Every try a DELL. Its a ctrl key f5??
And then SOMETIMES, the bios just aint ALL there, or wont do what YOU want it to do.
Saw one machine, couldnt add more then 64 megs, 2 HD locations, and couldnt take the floppy Offline. When the floppy failed, couldnt boot the system.

well i dont know how they are these days but the old Dell cases that housed the pre-gigahurtz systems are just retarded.
Whoever designed it didnt want anyone to open it, it gets to the point where i want to hammer off the plastic joints and just tape it shut.

and ya it is kinda stupid that they didnt just use the 'Del' key to open bios. its just some software engineers way of leaving his mark, same with the microsoft engineers who refuse to make things compatible. Jeez guys take a lesson from Macintosh wont you? you stole everything else from them!
