"Sony Corp. would consider buying the software unit of Palm Inc. PALM.O , the largest maker of handheld computers, if it were for sale, a Web report quoted Sony Chief Executive Nobuyuki Idei as saying. In an article posted on its Web site on Tuesday, AlwaysOn (http://www.alwayson-network.com) quoted Idei as saying in January that he wanted to own the software unit of Palm, in which Sony already holds a 6 percent stake."
Ok, I found this to be super surprising that Sony's CEO would announce this publicly. I know that Sony is anti-Microsoft in terms of desktop and pda software, but I expected them to continue to make their own OS based on the Linux platform. I truly beleive that if Sony decided to buy out Palm, then they would have a REAL competitor to the PocketPC platform. I know that Archon would argue that Palm OS 5 IS a real competitior, but they are just losing so much market share to the PocketPC platform.
