After a high-end DVD recorder with a strange Ready Brek glow? Then look no further than this new model from Hitachi

Unlike todays DVD players and recorders, which use a plain ole red laser, the new Hitachi model features the very latest blue laser, or Blu-ray technology. Hence the bright blue glow.

This shorter wavelength laser enables much more information to be crammed onto a single DVD disc. Weve reported on this technology before, back in issue 72, but this is the first time weve seen Hitachis model. Hitachi claims that its player, dubbed the Hi Vision Recorder, can store up to 27GB on a single layer disc (compared with 4.7GB for a conventional red laser recorder). This is enough for 13 hours of standard TV or more than two hours of Japans high-definition TV. Its expected to go on sale in Japan early next year, but the price has not yet been announced. Nor has Hitachi unveiled any plans for launch in the UK. We can but dream.
