Is it possible to connect a sub-woofer to a system that does not have an output specifically for a sub-woofer?

I would assume that it is possible, but it would not sound correct. A sub Woofer is a speaker just like any other except for the fact that it is designed to play lower frequencies. So if you plug the sub woofer into a regular speaker output for example, you would hear everything but at a much lower volume and frequency. If it has a built in cross-over then you would only hear the low frequencies. Basically if you do not have a sub woofer output, don't use a sub woofer. Buy some tower speakers with a built in sub woofer ,and/or mid range with a tweater and let the built in crossover handle things.

Yes, it's absolutely possible to do that. In fact, that's how my subwoofer in my car from 10 years ago was connected.

Just buy a crossover and connect it to the subwoofer. Problem solved.

Alternatively, get yourselves some F-mods crossover (http://www.hlabs.com/products/crossover/) for your amp.

Or if you are into modding then you can always use Ruri's method :slap . But I assumed that if you did not know the answer to that question, then anything else would be over your head. I hope you got the help you needed.

I did get the information I needed - thanks. I have another amp that does have a sub-woofer output, but it started to act up recently - the right channel sounds choppy and weak. I hooked up the old amp, which sounds pretty good, but I really miss the booming bass. After reading these replies, I think I'll look into repairing the amp.

Want some REAL fun....
Find a transducer.... They can be attched to any wood suport in the floor or under your Couch... They SHACK them and trattle them and if placed in a WALL support area, THEY become the base...

Actually, a lot of home theater subs have speaker inputs. You plug the right and left channels from your reciever into the sub and then plug the right and left speaker into the subs output. The sub then acts as the crossover.
