The SCO Group, a provider of Unix and Linux software platforms, filed a $1 billion lawsuit Friday (March 7) charging IBM Corp. with misappropriating trade secrets and competing unfairly in the Linux market. The complaint, filed in the State Court of Utah, alleges that IBM made concentrated efforts to improperly destroy the economic value of Unix, particularly Unix on Intel hardware platforms, in order to benefit IBM's Linux services business. SCO is requesting damages, in an amount to be determined at a trial, of no less than $1 billion.

SCO is a dying company and they are using this sut to try and stay alive in my opinion. If they win, then this will hurt Linux HUGELY because no large company is going to want to use it for fear of having to pay royalties or going to court. Honestly, who cares if IBM tweaked the GPL license to change the code? Linux may be free, but if they want to get anywhere with is, they need to let companies change the code. What are your thoughts guys?
