"It is not just the plot for a far-fetched science-fiction disaster movie. Something unexplained really is happening to the Earth's magnetic field.
In recent years, the field has been behaving in ways not previously seen in the admittedly short time it has been monitored.

Some researchers think it may presage a geomagnetic reversal when the north and south magnetic poles flip."

I hope it does. The view from my office sux and I need a change of scenery.

This is neet, as many years ago, i asked a few scientists about this, and finally got an answer.
Yes it does.
As with ANY spinning giroscope, it slows at points and wnats to flip over. as the Axis, slides to the sides, it will tend to wamt to shift.
Bu there are 2 phenomanom(?). And they arent sure of. 1, is the magnetic field change, (2) is the planet flipping over. They are not sure if the second will happen.

I just wish that maybe one day it can make up it's mind when it wants to snow and when it doesn't want to snow.

We got snow again today..ugh...

So what would happen if it did shift? I assume that the warmer weather that is below the equator will shift to above it and vice versus?

1) if its magnetic, not REALLY alot, we hope.
They think it happens about 1 time every 2000-5000 years.

2) if its a planet shift, hang-on baby we going for a ride. we dont know.
They dont know it it has happened yet, as they can measure the magnetic polarity of soil and heavy metals, but which has shifted, and did the other follow is the fun part.

if it did flip then we would suddenly be spinning in the wrong direction. Technically this should

1 reverse the polarity of the earth and combined with the sudden shift of the weight from changing direction so quickly, it should rend the planet into 2 large pieces.
and 2 cause you to start buying up land in Siberia incase it's worth alot of money as beach front property if we survive.

3 at the very least we would be thrown out of orbit with the sun at out present location and either freeze to death in space or fry to death closer to to it.

Actually, this would explain the ice age pretty darn well. Hmmm.....

REALLY.....
Its interesting to wonder, if the magnetic shift occurs, will the planet follow after. As we can see shifts in metal polarity's and it takes TIME to cause these to change.

The3 TIME you speak of would NEVER exist. You would NOT even EXIST yourself by the time IT happened. IMHO.

:poke

HAND :D

if it is supposed to happen every 2000-5000 years, I dont see anything dangerous about it. The last Ice Age was 10,000 years ago, no? (Though you could speculate that "the great flood" was about 5000 years ago...)

Besides, its just the poles that might flip, its not like the earth is going to be flipped or anything.

and think of it this way too, the compass industry would boom
