Situation:
I have been using WindowsXP Pro for almost a year now, I think. My problem has been there ever since I started using XP. I've reformatted my hard disk 2 times since starting to use XP.

System:
Tbird 1.4ghz
256MB Ram
IBM Deskstar 40gb HDD
K7S5A Mobo
Radeon8500LE
SBLive5.1

Problem:
Quite often while I'm using my computer, no matter what I'm doing, my taskbar just freezes. I can't press any buttons on it, but things like flashing buttons will still flash and buttons that are "pressed down" will remain that way. If I press some of the buttons, it does those actions after the taskbar unfreezes. When it's frozen, I can use everything else just fine, and alt+tab between programs. The ammount of time it stops varies sometimes, but it's usually about 15-30 seconds, I'd say. I have all the windows update patches and everything, and all updated drivers.

Thank you very much for your time. This is an extremely annoying problem and I hope someone has a solution to it. =)

Excuse me, I dont use XP, but..
What DirectX do you have...
What task bar is this...
I killed the task bars for my system, NOT the bar on the bottom, tASK bars that float around my screen. They kept lagging my system down..

I had a simliar problem and it turned out to be the video driver I was using. At the time I was using integrated video on a mobo w/ SiS Chipset 730 (or something like that) I backed down to windows standard svga driver and things were fine. Since then, I've installed a new video card and use their drivers. I don't have the problems anymore.

Actually I'm having a problem similar to this right now... Except it only deals with the program buttons themselves, the start menu, my quicklaunch, they all work fine... If I start an application it comes up backgrounded (eg., grey gradient in the title bar) and if i click o nthe programs' corresponding button on the task bar (and yes it's called a task bar) it keeps flashing from blue to grey and it doesn't foreground the window... But, if I click it twice, it'll minimize the window, but won't maximize it if i double click it again... It's like it onl ywants to do half its job... This problem only started happening to me today after I installed new drivers for my wireless network card.

Check the IRQ and memory locations, for video and the NEW card drivers..
IF they over lap....Try to change them..
