of course damages would be expected from excessive heat, but please define "excessive heat". your body is running about 98 degrees...

The following is an interesting read - about the new Apple Powerbooks and their heat issue. It is copied verbatim from an article at Insanely Great Mac.

Mini-Me Running Hot?
Have You Hugged your PowerBook Today?

Apple has posted a Kbase document noting that "The left palm rest and bottom of a PowerBook G4 (12-inch) computer can become warm after extended periods of use."
No kidding.
I have one on loan [of which more later] and 'feeling hot-hot-hot' describes it well enough. Mind you, early and middle-aged model TiBooks are about the same or worse. The old Wallstreet G3 may have been cool and black, but not on a bare leg.
Apple's suggestion? Turn the power down.
Cut the performance level. Says Apple:
1. Choose Apple menu > System Preferences.
2. Choose View > Energy Saver.
3. Click Show Details, if necessary.
4. Click the Options tab.
5. Choose Reduced from the Processor Performance pop-up menu.
Not ideal. I'm only working with an 867 model, so I'll assume the 1GHz version is hotter. I first noticed this in Apple dealers, where PB-12s on display at about midday were pretty hot after just a few hours' light use (mainly sitting there, admittedly).
Apple also recommends spinning down the HD via the Energy Saver prefs to reduce power use and heat. Good advice.

I've had 4 or 5 notebooks - the faster they are the hotter they seem to run.
Anyway - right after I got my Matrix notebook I ordered a little notebook cooler thing - Cyberguys sells them. This one is powered from a USB connection and it has three little fans. The notebook sits on top of it just fine.
It works great - I was using the notebook all day yesterday with it plugged in and running at full speed and it was cool as the proverbial cucumber.
