Not having USB 2.0 in the camera might not be a huge problem for some people since there are some USB 2.0 memory card readers available now.

Transferring ~12MByte over USB 1.1 isn't too bad (15-20 seconds, maybe more depending on the controller in the camera) and would work fine. But I agree trying to copy 1GB of USB 1.1 would be rather insane (I remember copying 4-5GB of MP3s from my computer to my old Nomad Jukebox over USB 1.1 and it took forever, mostly when Creative's software would crash after every 500-600MB).

Of course, the other bottleneck would be the SD interface, which probably can't pump out more tham 5-6MByte/sec.

I think that USB 2.0 has been around long enough to where no manufacturers should still be using the 1.1 spec. Afterall 2.0 is backwards compatible, there is no real excuse.

Cute dog pics BTW

Good review

It could be that the USB controller is embedded in the embedded processor used by the camera, therefore it can't be upgraded by dropping in an external USB 2.0 controller (I know the X-Scale processors used in most new PDAs are that way). The other concern is space on the board and possibly power (USB 2.0 controllers probably draw a bit more power than standard USB 1.1 controllers).

Given a bit more time, USB 2.0 will probably be more and more prevalent in cameras and possibly PDAs. Still, I'd never really want to use a camera as a memory card reader as it would be easier and probably faster to use the numerous card readers out there. But that's me.

heh... the low-light picture captures the essence that is the Portland metro area (cloudy much of the time, suburbian sprawl, etc.) :D
