... the option of the newspage showing me the 50 most recently responded to threads. :( It doesn't have to be default, but the option is nice.

I'd probably post alot more. And then you would all hate me. :D

ps-congrats! You guys are officially in my 'multiple checks per day' list - along with Slashdot, Teoti, CNN, etc.

Thanks for the heads up. Dan and I will work at creating forum threads on the news page.

BTW, how does our news ranked compared to other sites? Do you find it informative, bland, dry, etc...

Thanks man!

I usually check those before heading to the actual forum.

I think the news is pretty damn good. I wouldn't say it is a shining beacon of tech news, but there's usually something there worth reading, unlike some others *coughcoughcnetcoughzdnetcough*. I'd rank up there with wired, but in a different format (no long pontifications on how the news item will effect farmers in the arctic tundra and belly dancers in Peru). But, I read articles there and here about as much.

Honestly, not too much. Usually you have one person go on their daily romp through the forums, so you have whatever the last visitor posted to, and maybe not what is actually the hottest topic. Try it for yourself. Reload the page a couple times a day and see how many screen names are the same.

I like the categories, but there's something nice about the style used by FatWallet.com, where the lastest post bumps the thread to the top. The higher the message volume, the less representative the summary at the main page. Maybe if that was changed to link to the stories that have the most new posts in the last 3-7 days.

Not sure I understand....

fatwallet on their forum page just seems to list the complete latest post... is that what you mean? Not care about replies but just the latest posts?

One problem is we dont have enough people posting in the forums, which makes the current design on the front page seem a little bland. I go off the front page all the time. For example, I only list the latest 10 posts, no matter what forum (posts/replies). The range of time is rather large..8:23pm through 1:21pm. Shows not enough activity in forums.

Hopefully we can get even more activity in the forum with many different people posting. As the traffic comes, then I can do some type of ranking where whats listed is ranked by how many total replies there are.

Neuroking, can you explain more what you mean?

The fatwallet reference is just as you said. The most recent post on a very limitted number of forums is bumped to the top, same as the top ten on the main page. I thinik it's because they only have something like 5 forums, it makes for quick browsing for interesting things. With so many sub categories, it's hard to just navigate the most recent all around posts. Some kind of happy intermediate would be nice (good topic divisions, but too much time to check).

I think the easiest way of accomplishing this is to add the option for registered user to change the news tap at the top to bring up the top ten from the main page, plus 30 more most recent.

The other option is maybe put a nav bar for the discussion topics on the left. When the page loads, you could have the nav bar on the left with closed folder icons - and in the main area the top 25, 30, 40 whatever. Clicking on each folder on the left displays the contents in that classic fs tree look and loads the top 25 from that section. and so on.

What do ya think?
