"Nowadays, it seems like every product has to have a hard drive in it, even if it doesn’t need it. At this rate, we might even see toasters with hard drives in them someday. Fortunately, the hard drive in Samsung’s new camcorder actually serves a purpose. In fact, it serves many purposes.
If Samsung just wanted to make a small camcorder, they probably could have license the MicroMV format from Sony. But they had much bigger plans in mind. Nicknamed the “Gadget Cam” by the Samsung production team, the IT CAM-7 is really a camcorder, camera, MP3 player, audio recorder, pc camera, and a portable data storage device combined into one. With all these different functions, the hard drive obviously became the better choice than any other tape/disc format.
If Samsung left it at that, the IT CAM would already be awesome. But Samsung toss in MPEG-4 real-time encoding at VGA (640x480) resolution in 30 fps for the camcorder part. They also added USB 2.0 for the quickest possible transfer speed available today. On top of all this, they dropped in a Memory Stick support.
The scheduled release date for the IT CAM is August 2003. Since the specifications are not finalized yet, there might be some minor changes between now and then. Nevertheless, there are probably plenty of technophiles that are drooling for the IT CAM now.
Features:
Multifunction gadget (camcorder, camera, mp3 player, audio recorder)
MPEG-4 video compression format
USB 2.0 support "
