I was thinking of getting a new pair of headphones (just normal ones) and then the idea hit me: why not just have portable wireless ones..? I'm a high school student, and always bring my nomad jukebox zen with me every day.... i thought maybe i could mount the base inside of the backback, to plug my zen or cd players into.... but then i realised that all of the transmitting bases required a power outlet :( ....SOO.....I was wondering if anyone knew how to just simulate a power outlet with a battery....I was thinking, like, two 9 volts... because the power input is 18v....but i don't know if it would screw something up, or the minute a little of the power is gone, it would shut down......any thoughts would be appreciated

Aside from carrying a massive power pack around with you, the only things I can think of are those hiking packs... with the solar panels n stuff...

like.... this...

Yeah, you'd drain teh 9 volts in about 20 seconds... It's not the volts that are the problem. it's the Amps. i remember something similar with another type of portable electronic device, where they took laptop batteries, gutted them and wired them together, but I have no idea where. Hmmmm... may be worth looking into....

Here is a wacko thought. Is there a way to build in a Bluetooth transmitter and reciever? If so, then this could be a low power solution. I wonder how hard it would be to jimmy rig something like this. I will talk to my friend James and show him this thread. If anyone can do this, he can.

Nope, not possible. There's not enough bandwidth. What ppl ARE doing is, for compressed music, having some buffer memory in the headphones and transfering songs to that. I Looked into this before, since it would be really nice. Try a yahoo search on "bluetooth and headphones". Maybe someone thought of a way around this...

The problem is the bandwidth of the Current Bluetooth spec.
Still looking but I think I remember it being less then a meg. Soo that's that rub. Bluetooth audio needs to compress the stream bigtime, thus needing a computer like the link I have below. For out of the box, you could look at doing something like this
http://shop3.outpost.com/product/3265201
iROCK! 300W FM Transmitter
Plugg it into the output on your Ipod or what have you and then pick up some half decent FM headphones.
If you got a frys near you they have a better model (not up on outpost) that lets you tune to ANY FM range. Works great in the car and home within reason. NOT a solution for multi Room.
But for personal use.

The coolest Bluetooth headset I have seen so far is here

Problem is that it needs a laptop or some other device (that will take it's drivers of course) that has USB .. THEN you could stream

[edit].. found other model with ability to tune to any FM freq..

[Edit] Max Bluetooth data rate 115,200 bps NOT kbs or Kbs but bits per second...!!!

all a power cable does is switch AC to DC.. Kinda sloppy at that..
Lots of heat loss..
If you take your wall powered transmitter apart and see what kinda of power it takes in.. DC 5,6 or 9 volt and how many amps.. Odds are you could hot wire some batteries to the main board bypassing the wall pluggin..

Just a thought...

True dat. Actually, if you can find a power adapter that fits the plug on your iPod, I assume you could cut the wire, strip it and make your own battery pack by connecting the terminals in series so they add correctly to the requirements (note: add correctly as in, using the correct formulas via Keirchoff's and Ohm's Laws - so sue me for forgetting the spelling... :P ). This is actually really making me think.... awesome!

You could in theory have a power brick that you charge via outlet and keep around for when you need it. Reverse the polarity and you can recharge the mobile device (like those cheapo 'emergency cell phone chargers' that use a 9 v battery to give you 15 minutes of talk time). If you use small enough batteries and test it out, you MAY be able to weave the battereies into a piece of clothing (it would be warm and heavy, but distribute the weight.) Say, 200 AAA batteries, which cost around $150 total for 1800mA rechargables. Would make a great winter coat...

Now that I think about it, this is funky as hell. You can get a set of larger headphones, gut them and use the electronics from teh bluetooth set (which has crappy response rates, but we're talking funky tech here, so screw substance for teh sake of teh arguement - hell, the bottom of the line $20 Sony ear buds have 22-24k). Line the insides with more batteries (since it only takes a 250mAH 3.7V battery for 3 hours of PC transmitted music). No, wait, take it another notch. Get some Ety 4s earphones, gut the bluetooth set and remove the drivers and pull a different Frankenstein and replace teh buds with high quality ones. Make a funky mold out of aluminum foil, and use a propane torch to melt a piece of tupperwear in the mold, making sure it is bit g enough to fit the bt electronics inside. Seal shut with a low flame or soldering iron. Melt in a clip for clipping the unit to the back of a shirt. Collar of shirt is lined with AAAs with a sewn in socket for the power input to the bt electronics.

Oh ****. Now I have a new project.... *evil wringing of hands*

We'll see what happens after i paint my place this weekend. This could be wicked awesome!

i have also been lookin for a pair of headphones that i can plug into my zen touch and leave in my bag without any wires, you dont need to do any fancy stuff with transmitters and things, you simply need a lot of money, lol, there is a pair you can get, here is the link to a site telling you all about them.
