Do audio DVDs usually or always have higher fidelity sound than CDs? I'm asking about DVDs that are playable in regular DVD-V players, not DVD-A discs. For instance, Eagles Hell Freezes Over CD vs. DVD?

WEll if the audio is dts, than bitwise, the quality is much higher...

16bit CD vs 32Bit DTS

As for DD i am not sure....24bits I think....don't take my word for that though

What about HD CD's? What is their bit rate?

And how would you compare DVDA to SACD?

Noooooo! Die topic die! Just kidding.

There are several long posts with the whole DVD-A vs SACD. Here's a direct link:

It's not as easy as bit rates. From what I remember, though, and I may be wrong, the DVD-video audio tracks (track that plays on all dvd players), is the same fidelity as a CD, but with more channels. CDs only have 2 (left and right), while the DVD should have '5.1' (left front, left rear, right front, right rear, center, and bass/effects).

I've been watching the format wars semi closely and originally thought I would hold out for a HDCD/SACD/DVD-A hybrid player, but HDCD seems to died on the launchpad. If I were you, I'd remove HDCD from the 'gotta have' category, too.

Stop by one of the local high end electronics stores, like tweeter, and ask to listen to em. Chances are, you will want to get better speakers/headphones before switching over to the hifi audio.

you just won't see enough market for the new audio formats for a while to come.

we're stuck with 44khz 16bit for the majority of our audio purchases (or worse, with compressed stuff like mp3 or aac).

If you aren't happy, get a better outboard DAC (digital to analog converter), and a clean amp; it might make a positive difference with a bigger part of your existing music library than if you went DVDA or SACD. or whatever is out there these days.

If you still aren't happy, go vinyl, but again you have some media availability issues, but the old stuff (jazz & classical) still sound great.

imho

Dvd's still use the 16/48 standard like cds, only true Dvd-a has 24/96 capability! so dvd and cd have the same fidelity, and bit rates differ from title to title, depends on which house mastered them, cd are always 1444 kb/sec i believe, and DTS is not 32bit, sorry. DTS 96/24 decoders will bring high-resolution DVD-a sound to normal dvd movies this fall!~ very exciting! HD-CD is worthless, wait for hd dvd. the only difference between cd and dvd is multichannel streams on the dvd because of the higher storage capacity, and as for sacd, it is the best soundin i think when properly configured for multichannel sound.
