View Full Version : Should I get a HDTV receiver?
I have the Sony KP65WV700 65" HD Ready TV. I was considering a HDTV receiver to pick up the HDTV channels now available. Here's the thing: I have cable and I live aproximately 30 miles outside of a major city. Even if I get a HDTV receiver, will I pick up any of the channels? If so, which receiver would everyone out there recommend?
Thanks for the input.

I would save your money for now. Many cable companies announced support for HDTV through Cable, so chances are you will have to buy one of their boxes anyways to view it.
True IO:
And the options for HDTV are very slim. The US governement, is forceing all braodcastors to change over to HDTV. How long this will take is your own guess.
As for Display, you might consider it for your VCR/VIVO/DVD player.
I aint looked into it very hard, but Philips is said to have a nice one.

I receive my HD signal for my plasma through Time Warner (Scientific Atlanta 3100HD set). I had digital cable before and they came and just swapped out the box at no additional charge. I do have all the premium channels plus three computers networked using RoadRunner though, so maybe they figured they just owed me or something:D
ECA: Last I heard it was pushed out to 2010...but I could be wrong:rolleyes:
PBS in this area, already has it, over broadcast.

The image quality is only as good as the source that is being fed into it. If it's crap in (compressing tons of bandwidth to fit more channels) then you are going to get crap out. You can thank the cable companies for that.
being on an open bandwidth(PBS) and few channels in the area, 12 total(including UHF, only 2 on VHF). They can have all they want.
Cable sucks. For all the tech out there Europe, and japan are ahead of us. By a LONG margin.
companies in the US, like to get money, for AS LONG AS POSIBLE. This is one reason tech can cost alot more here then in other countries. They wont use it, until theres enough people complain about it.
Im a believer in Advancement. esp in software. What comes out should Learn from the old stuff, and be an improvement. NOT some company trying the same idea "There WAY". And it doesnt work. I like 1942, but cant see why they didnt use the Tribes2 engine, or network interface. Arnt we supposed to LEARN from the past. Not make it redundant.
MOO3 is a shame. For all they put in it, it LAGS. and is very hard to play. there instructions suck.
