I was shopping for a new display (at Best Buy), and the sales "associate" told us that plasma displays need to have the "GAS RECHARGED" at some interval. A friend was told the same thing (maybe at the same store).

Is this a true statement? I thought plasma / lcd displays were pretty permanent.

In what I have heard, LCD and plasma, have about a 5 year life. It can be longer depending on Temp, and sun exposure.
The material between the plates, is a liquid, and the voltage conduction causes it to dry out. With CARE, and environment control, you MAY get 10 years, before a recharge is needed.
NOW, the funny part. YOUR BOOK, that you get with this product SHOULD say something about it. I would contact the Maker, and ask what a recharge price costs. should be cheap($500 or less).

All plasma's are actually rated at 30,000 hour life, which is the same as a Cathode Ray TV (CRT) so I don't think you have anything to worry about that. If they told you abour "recharging" your plasma, it sounds like they were trying to Con you into purchasing an extended warranty.

This is news to me. I know that they say you have to worry about burn in, but the lifetime is as Ioman said... Even the burn in issue is mild at best, just something to be aware of.

I also think that the burn in from a Plasma set is less likely to happen when compared to a RPT.

Are you guys kidding? You cant recharge a plasma panel. Once the gas is burnt you toss it and get another!

Plasma Displays DO NOT need recharging (where in the world ARE these salespeople coming from?). Ioman is correct in the 30k hour estimated life span -- which BTW for the average viewer comes out to WELL over the 5 year mark. It's more like 13 years and this would be watching the display for 6 hours a day, 7 days a week.

A little over 5 years. You watch that much TV a day? Damn. You must have one hell of a DVD collection:D

I wish.
I set it in the background for noise.
And for security, I leave it on, they think Im sleeping then.

Panasonic and Pioneer are claiming 60000 life span on their new models.

That's great news. Another fact to indicate that plasma technology is still evolving and improving.
