Unfortunately all of the Sony Carousel DVD players have certain design flaws. Like: They always play a DVD or CD at start up. All though there appears to be setting to stop this it does not. Every time you start up any of these players they will start to play the first disc, the last disc, or the last disc played. But, whatever it has to play something before you can do anything. It has features that would greatly benefit Sony if they were thought through and they were not. For example: They have a feature call Disc Explorer but it is slow and 99% of DVD's either do not have titles or they do not have pictures. Meaning you have to input that information manually which is made more difficult by a non wireless keyboard. Sony, shooting themselves in the foot, provide a "feature" called program play in which you can show off your new Sony DVD player by typing in all of the titles and tracks that are your favorites and then being able to display them to your friends, but wait, it does not save those setting, you have to sit there and spend half and hour typing them in, right before your friends, pretty much negating any novelty of it and taking a great deal of shine off the Sony name, what a great engineering design blunder. I have called Sony about these, what I consider problems, and they are unable to tell me how the player is suppose to function, they don't know and the manual won't tell you either. Great idea, the product is of good quality, but the design is poor. It is obivious that the engineer who designed the product has never owned a DVD player.

It could just be a case of poor market research. Maybe some people like that?

I have one of the DVP-CX875P and I really love it, but it is some of those little nagging proglems that just drive you crazy. I will be sending my unit back, for the second time, to see if they can figure out it is or is not suppose to do the things it's doing.
I researched this product and others for many months. I found out that it is not what the manufacture says it is what they don't say that makes the difference. For example you will not see any specs on contrast/brights levels for LCD RPTV's, Why, cause they $uck.

I have never been a huge Sony fan. What are some other good CD players out there?

Admins:
I made a new thread, but I meant to put it in here, now I know to post a reply.
Okay everyone else:
I'm looking for a place where I can download the operators manual, anyone know?
I need to find out if this box has a REAL RS232 port and if the protocol is available.
Thanks,

I found a sony page for it on sale here.

I couldn't find the Instruction Manual. I'm bet they could email it to you if you contact their cusomter support and say you lost it or something. Heck maybe they could answer the question better than we could. Not sure what you are asking specfically about the serial interface. I did find this listed on that same webpage if it helps.

Thanks, the RS232c is what I'm looking for. It would be interesting to see if a program can be developed to select discs from the carousel and play Title and tracks instead of using the front panel buttons.

What are you going to connect to it? I was trying to figure out what else besides a laptop would want an interface like that. What would be the purpose of doing that, if that is the case??

The idea is to write a user interface instead of mashing buttons on it's front panel. A computer program is more user freindly than an LCD.
I've posted information on an open-source program to control CX777ES via RS232 here:
cx777es-rs232 (http://www.agoraquest.com/viewtopic.php?topic=12060&forum=50)
You can also jump directly to the sourceforge page using this link:
