I have two DVD Writers at home, the Plextor 504A and the TDK 440Ind DVD. They both have trouble reading regular CD media.

The Plextor will not read older copied or burned 2X,4X CD media and the TDK will not read some retail factory pressed CD media. Is this just an issue with DVD Writers in general that I am experiencing?

I was hoping to have one drive that read everything, but now I am thinking its a good idead to keep my regular CD-RW drive just for CD media.

I've heard lot's of storuies about how the DVD ram drives have compatability issues in reading cd or getting a DVD player to read a burner DVD in DVD r. I think that the tech nology was rushed as DVD R and RW appeared almost over night. I remember that CD technology was developed over many years staarting from full sized laser disc the size of a LP and was not released until the format was more or less perfected. Today everyone rushes to the newest and coolest stuff and mostly Beta releases are prevelent at first. (Just like the gigabit ethernet IOman) and things will be worked out over time. The introduction of so many formats at once has got to have read or write issues in it some where. Also cdfs is not the same as DVDfs and the differences in the firmware itself will be enough to cause conflicts in media design and write formats that all file systems might not be supported. If you are using NTFS you might try partitioning a fat 32 section on the Hdd and copy files to it to burn or read CDs from as cdfs is a 16 bit program originally or dual boot to win 98 on that partition and use certain formats on that partition.
