as far as the wireless goes, i think the 802.11b is the most (or only?) widespread out there now. do you guys know what will come after that? is there more preference for the "a" over the "g" standard, or vice versa?

the newer centrinos (dothan) i've read will have a/b in the third quarter and b/g in the fourth quarter of 2003. http://news.com.com/2100-1039-1001656.html?tag=nl)

probably neither "a" or "g" will have access points available for a while, but what would you recommend getting when they do become available later on in the year?

I think the market seems to be heading towards "g" as the next step since it supports 802.11b (although at a decreased speed of a "b" client resides on the same "g" segment) and doesn't cost quite as much as "a".

"a" is an option if you are already in a crowded 2.4GHz airspace and need some additional speed. The only faults is that it is not backwards-compatible with "b" without using a second radio/card for 2.4GHz and the radio waves in the 5GHz band don't like to penetrate certain materials.

My recommendation for the home would be to go with 802.11g because it is backwards compatible with 802.11b and cheaper than 802.11a. Basically, G has the bandwidth of A but the range of B (which is better than A).

I agree. It seems like 'a' got a head start, but didn't use it wisely, and 'g' is catching up quick and will surpass soon.
