I just ordered the Dell Dimension 8300 desktop customized to include some great features. I hope that I made the right decision. Does anyone recommend this computer? Are there any known problems associated with this computer? I was also curious as to the quality of Dell's computers and the service that they provide. I have read many reviews -- some saying that Dell makes the best computer and others complaining that they hate their Dell. I am completely confused. Did I make the right decision?

Thanks,

SM

Personally, I like Dell. Here are the major points on both sides:

Hate Dell?
- Proprietary motherboards and power supplies make upgrading a hassle in some cases. In MOST cases it isn't a big deal (RAM, HD, CD drives, GPUs), but others it is horribly annoying. Ask yourself how much you intend to upgrade teh innards before buying.
- It isn't home built. You have no control over cooling options, limited control over BIOS settings, and in general, very litle tweaking ability.
- It's a Dell. Most die hard PC attics will shun prebuilt machines. Ignore them, unless they are your only friends.
-Limited customization when purchasing. In general, Dell's options are 3 months behind on everything but CPUs.

Love Dell?
- Customer service is generally excellent. You will hear a horror story or two, for sure, but in general, they solve most problems. Most businesses go with Dell for this reason. If something goes wrong, it's better to have someone that will replace parts for you, rather than running around trying to find who to send stuff back to, and what to replace the defective part with.
- Coupons. Dell has TONS of coupons. In fact, if you already ordered, I would call again, talk to another salesperson, and ask for discounts. Student, online codes, Small business, etc. in general, if you didn't get at least a 10% discount beyond whatever automatic coupons are applied, you should contact them.

Did I miss anything guys?

Brandon,

Thank you for the information. It was nice to hear from someone with knowledge of Dell computers. Now, I don't feel so apprehensive about purchasing a Dell computer. Also, I will call Dell and try to get a better discount.

Thanks again,

If you do not plan on upgrading or modifying your system a ton, the Dell is probably the best way to go. They appear to be very reliable and good quality for the money.

I've got an 8300. I just saw the overall price was damn cheap on this one! I think estimating double my 8300 price on a custom built computer would still be underestimating the price on building a custom made one built by me! I bought this one when it came with a radeon 9800 pro 128meg video card. But right now, Dell doesn't build a computer that can really support a video card like the x800 xt. Couldn't find one on e-bay. I read on a post that Dells right now can't handle the performance requirements for the x800 xt. That may not be the case, but they aint sticking them in Dells cheap enough to have any buyers. Last year dell did good for performance, but this year I've noticed that they are subtly introducing more integrated video in their computers. That sucks for Dell for this year! 2004!

You are right, most of Dell's computers are still using 250Watt powersupplies!

On another note, my neighbors Dell just went out one month after the warranty expired. He called tech support and they told him that according to the light codes on the back of his system, he needs new memory. So he spent $200 on new memory and the system still doesnt work. I am pretty sure his motherboard went out. Any ways, he wound up buying a new Dell, this time with an extended warranty. I was not impressed with their tech support at all.
