View Full Version : My dilemma...

I want to get a hard drive based mp3 player but unsure which one to get... although ive narrowed it down to three (unless you know of one and like ?):
1. Archos Jukebox 20 GB
2. Nomad Zen (NX)? 20 GB
3. iPod 10 GB
I have the money for the iPod but don't want to blow off the extra dollars if i dont really need too. I personally like the iPod the best for being the smallest and lightest (which is my largest concern).
If i choose over the archos or the nomad which is the better of the two, OR should i just shell out the extra dollars and get the iPod?
Thanks.

Personally I don't like the design of the Archos myself...just because of it's larger size. If you don't mind toting that thing around, then I'm sure it would be.
I've thought about the Nomad Zen myself...especially of the larger HD compared to the iPod, and for a cheaper price.
For me, I liked the fact that the iPod had a bunch of optional accessories and cases.
I think the extra money is definitely worth the iPod...but if you're planning on using it as a portable HD, 10GB is gonna cut it close.
The new Zen NX model may be worth taking a look at though...
Good luck!

I would look at the Zen NX and the Apple iPod. Archos stuff is bleah.
The iPod looks great and works great, but is 10GB enough for you? If it is and storage isnt an issue, get the iPod, I think you will be extremely happy you did.

/me scratches out the archos off the list
I don't have any plans on using it as a portable hard drive but i do have a large mp3s collection (coming close to 15gigs). I don't need ALL of my mp3 collection with me though, 10 gigs should be fine.
To me the 20 gigs sounds very tempting (i think its a bit cheaper too) but its larger size is a draw back at the same time.
Is the size of the zen(nx) acceptable compared to the ipod ?
Thanks again :)

get the nomad jukebox zen usb 2.0 version.....NOT THE NX!!! i have the former, and it's awesome.....it's got a smaller screen, and the whole thing is a bit larger than the ipod, but i love the menus compared to the ipod......and contrary to some peoples' opinions on the software that it uses, it works great......

better? :):D :)
My last question was:
Isn't the Zen NX a newer model (including being smaller and having better menus) than the Zen ?

well, the nx only has 8mb of ram, instead of the original zen's 16mb....this means that you can't skip through songs as well, and the hd has to spin up more....

the nomad jukebox zen has been tested for sound quality compared to the ipod.....and it won.....people say that the zen sounds a whole ton better than the ipod.....so......in my experiences the zen it sounded awesome.....better than my sony r707 (i think that's the model....it's one of the newer netmd ones)

it doesnt sound a whole lot better, slightly cleaner at higher sound levels maybe. My friend has a Jukebox 3 which is just a bigger Zen. dude you're way off base

Why not just go to Best Buy and try them both out? I heard that the software for the Zen sucks and you are forced to use Music Match, plus you cannot just drag and drop files from your computer to the MP3 player.

We get Itunes for Windows in like 2-3 months, which gives me support for AAC files, then the ipod will sound way better simply becuase of that.

I'm kinda waiting for iTunes for windows myself, just to see if it was worth the wait :)
Everyone's been suggesting MediaCenter 9...I haven't downloaded the trial version yet, so I'm still using MMJB for my iPod.
If you want to save some money, I don't see why the Zen wouldn't be a decent choice.
As far as what Triton posted about CompUSA, I've heard of that device, but thats the first time I saw it.

Nope, not off base at all. I have the Zen and it is not a smaller Jukebox 3. My cousin has the 3rd gen ipod and the Zen sounds better hands down and you don't have to be an audio nut to distinguish between the two. The ipod is sweet and it does sound really effing good. The Nomad is the exception here and Creative really outdid themselves. It's just great sound quality, the best I've heard out of a portable device... and let me reiterate that the ipod is still awesome so you guys don't think that I'm bashing.

Prior to the release of the 3rd gen Ipod I was looking at the Zen. Until I was able to hold one in my hands, rather than just looking at it through the box. It felt much larger than the Ipod. I think it is comparible to a cassette type walkman (size-wise) whereas the Ipod, especially the 3rd gen one, is much smaller.
Size was a major concern for me as I planned to use it at the gym and I wanted something that would clip on the INSIDE of my pants pocket. If size is a major concern, I would opt for the Ipod. Although I haven't seen the new Zen. Maybe that one is going to be alot different.
Sonic Blue has a new HD based mp3 portable coming out too. (Although I'd never buy another sonic blue product again, ie I owned a rio900)
...Plus the Ipod has loads of accys to buy. Cases, addons, etc.

does this mean that you CAN drag/drop files with the iPOD? I was under the impression that you had to use itunes or music match or something like that.
