Recently my computer has been acting funny. If i restart (or the computer decideds to do so itself) my main hard drive usually can not be detected in the BIOS. Unplugging it from the IDE cable and power and reconnecting it usually solves this problem..or if I let it sit long enough (in the BIOS) and try to redetect the drive, it will find it. I have no idea why it has decided to do this.
I have a Gigabyte 7VRXP motherboard (I believe it is rev 1 or 1.1) and the hard drive is a Maxtor 40GB 700DX
Thank you for any thoughts or suggestions on this matter.
Suggestion...
Disconnect the cable from the HD, and board.
CHECK all the little wires, make sure they are STRAIGHT.
Make sure you have the RIGHT connection on the board.. they are 0 and 1... 0 is the FIRST connection for the FIRST drives.
Maxtor, is NOT a great drive all the time. IBM, fujitsu, are Very good.

I haven't had good expirences with Maxtor in the past. IBM is ok. Samsung is great drive also, but might be OEM only.
Like ECA said make sure you have your IDE cables in secure. How long did you say you had the drive? Does it sound bad when you do get it running? Bad would be louder than normal and possibly scratching noises.
WOW, praise from Vin:
I like it...:D
IF YOU HEAR a HIGH pitched wine from the drive, or ANY METAL on METAL... SHUT DOWN and get a NEW drive...
PERIOD............. REST, REFORMAT, REDO..YUCK
