My daughter is looking for a PC or Apple laptop for college. She's going into Fashion Design, and FIT (her school) said either one will do. She's used to a PC, but most designers I know use Apples. Does anyone have a suggestion of whether to get the Toshiba Satellite P25-S607 or an Apple Powerbook G4 1000? We know we could get something cheaper in a desktop, but like the portability of a laptop, the size of the 17" screen and other features of both of these. Thanks.

I would recommend an Apple Powerbook. A good friend of mine just joined Harvard to get her Masters in Architecture and she had a Windows Based laptop. Her teacher and the majority of the people in her class use Apple computers, and while she had the same software installed on her system, she complained about differences among the Apple and Windows version. So she sold her laptop and bought an Apple laptop. Now she doesn't have problems following the teachers instructions in class or exchanging blueprints etc. with other students.

I would just recommend going with what the school and teacher recommends for her program.

Thanks for the suggestion - we're leaning towards the Apple. By the way, I called the Fashion Design Dept. at FIT twice to ask what they use, and they continue to say they don't have a preference! The IT section of FIT's website also shows no preference to a PC or Apple, which surprises me! That's why I'm trying to get info elsewhere.

What about asking the teachers? You will want to make sure to go with the majority most likely. If they truly have no preference, go with a Windows based PC.

hmm this sounds like a sticky situation doesn't it? I think a Windows based laptop would probably be fine. The Apple would be easier for her to use, unless she doesn't have experience with the OSX operating system.
