I just got in the market to buy a new laptop and fell in love with the compaq x1000. But looking up info on it, I realized there was a 10% coupon on it two weeks ago that would've saved me a $150 :(

I still want to get the new Compaq x1000 but the only way I can justify the purchase is if there have been worthwhile changes made to the laptop and it's price structure over the past two weeks.

I noticed (based on the posts on the x1000 thread - i wish i saw this forum or deal back then :( ) they now offer a dvd burner for $200 more and no longer offer the 128 mb ram setting as the base setting so obviously there has been some changes in the pricing/customization. The starting price is still $1300 after the $100 rebate but I suspect/hope that many of the upgrades now already added on at this starting price such as the 64 mb video card, 256 ram, wireless lan simply weren't already added on to the price two weeks ago. I was wondering if anyone who bought the compaq x1000 laptop back during the 10% off deal can confirm that the pricing structure is different and if so, what the differences were.

Please just take a second or so to go here and see if there are any changes between what was offered two weeks ago during the 10% off deal and what's currently offered now that might have made the wait worth it. (Did the price lower at all and just isn't apparent to me because now they give the 64 mb card and wireless lan as standards as opposed to giving the 32 mb and Lan as standard, did the cost of any of the upgrades fall? etc.)

or if that link doesn't work...

If it helps, I'm planning to custimize the laptop with the lowest available options for each category but get the dvdrw upgrade ($200) , sxga upgrade ($50), and 64 mb graphics card ($75) bringing my total to $1500 after the $100 mail in rebate.

So what I'm wondering is, would a similarly equipped laptop have cost me around the same two weeks ago even after the 10% off coupon? Was the dvd burner option even available?

I'm also wondering if you think it's worth while to spend $50 more to upgrade from the 1.3 M to the 1.4 M processor and if i'm right in thinking that I can just get the 1dimm 256 mb ram chip for now and then add in a 512 mb ram chip later on into the second slot (the thread on this laptop says that people were having trobule finding the second slot even).

Your help is very much appreciated, thanks so much. This is just a big purchase that I can barely afford and that's why I'm so nervous about getting the best possible deal.

Thank you so much for taking the time to read all this and respond.

I would also be greatful if you let me know as to know comparably priced, comparably equipped laptops, thanks. I already saw the dell 8500 and wasn't pleased with it.

I also noticed that the prices of not just this laptop but for all laptops have increased

the medion laptop, any of the dell laptops, many toshiba laptops and stores in general simply no longer offer deals of the same caliber as they did two weeks ago. Does this have any thing to do with the surge in sales due to back to school. A friend that works at IBM told me that IBM lower the deals that the give in time for the Back to School sales surge and reoffer the deals again mid september or so once the sales number of consumers fall back down. Do you think there is any truth to this? Would I be better off waiting till then though I really need a laptop for school or perhaps just buying it with the plan of returning if better deals pop up? (And yes I already know about the extra 5% rebate students get from hp).

i'm not too worried about that. maybe i'll luck out or something. even if not, i don't mind waiting if i have to but i love this laptop. i want to get it. could someone please answer my question and tell me how the customization options and prices differed from two weeks ago to now?

did they offer dvd burners back then?

did they offer the 64 mb graphics card/256 mb ram 1 slot/wireless lan as standard even at the opening price of 1299 back then or did you have to add money to upgrade to them?

any help is really appreciated thanks.

christmas sales don't start in august, christmas is over four months away!!!

the main question I want answered is if the dvd burner was an option two weeks ago. anyone who bought this laptop when the 10% off coupon was still applicable, please let me know.

If it was, I think that alone is worth the price loss.

1. No, dvd burner was not an option

2. Yes, 64MB ATI 9200 has always been an option

3. Wireless was always the default option.

Prices have NOT changed at all except for the starting price which was increased by $50 to cover the upgrade to 256MB from 128MB as the lowest config available.

Any machine configured with 256MB or more costs exactly the same today as it did 6 weeks ago. Except of course that the 10% discount coupon is no longer valid.

That's the ONLY change made in the past 6 weeks.

I agree. Call me stupid, too, but don't prices go DOWN for Christmas? I remember like 600 dollars in rebates and 12 or 24 months no interest financing last year at BestBuy.
