I've been perfectly happy with my Pioneer A04 DVD-R/RW drive connected to my laptop via an IDE<->FireWire bridge and a FireWire CardBus card. I think Plextor still has the most strength in their SCSI drives and their mid-range IDE CD-RW drives and not much else.

It would be nice to see how a comparable LaCie FireWire/USB 2.0 drive would be against the Plextor drive reviewed.

Who makes the LaCie drives? I don;t think that LaCie actually makes the hard drives or writers themselves.

LaCie usually uses Pioneer for the DVD-RW drives and probably Maxtor and/or Western Digital for the hard drives. For the smaller sized drives, probably IBM/Hitachi and/or Toshiba.
