Ok here goes. Toshiba has announced a new IPOD killer... The link is http://www.theregister.co.uk/content/54/32469.html

What do you guys think? Let the bashing begin :D

I really like the way it looks and the fact that there are different colors to choose from. I wonder if it will make it statside and when?

Yeah I agree. The colors are great and the player looks super slim. Toshiba is known for quality, but I wonder what the price would be. Their current 5gb player is priced at some ridiculous price of around $300 at shoptoshiba.com... if they want to compete they would have to set a low price....

Doesn't their current Gigabeat use IBM's microdrive in it? I thought I remember reading about it somewhere. That is a pretty cool idea, but I have not heard much about it since.

That Gigabeat looks hella tight and much better than the iPod IMO. The iPod looks cool, but its a litle too fluffy cutsie if you ask me. This looks a lot more serious and I like the multiple colors to choose from. Which formats does this support? Ogg Vorbis would be way cool.

It looks like it just supports WMA9 and Mp3 for now. It would have been cool if it supported Ogg Vorbis because it would have set it apart. I can't tell whether it supports USB 2.0 or FireWire though.

I also changed the title of this thread to have the players name in it, hope that is cool Shniks.

Here are some larger pictures I found.

Another pic. It looks like a USB port on the side, so I might have answered my own question.

No probs Ioman... The pics look gorgeous... This really might be an IPOD killer.... The blue one looks so sleek... wonder how it performs tho...

This picture really makes the Gigabeat stand out I think. The design is very simplistic and sexy.

Although this page is in Japanese, it looks like it only supports USB 2.0 when compared to the other models:

Shinks really has me interested now, can ya tell! :)

I am thinking the same thing. I am really intriqued now. I wish the ear buds looked better designed and that the player at least has FireWire support. That seems to be hurting it.

oooh thanks for the pics. I really am liking this looks wise. That white stand looks kind of weird though like it doesn't match the player. Anyone else think that?

Yea this is an awesome new portable... I wonder if it will function as a data storage device detectable under windows XP. ?? Another nice function would be firewire and a built in FM Tuner. The size is awesome, this is gotta be the smallest mp3 player yet, as far as capacity is concerned. iRiver makes a nice 512mb player thats smaller and hangs from the neck weighing like 2 oz with the AA battery. (But thats still 19.5 gigs less storage:)) The Gigabeat g20 retails for 415 US Dollars and will hit Europe before it comes to the states. Available in Japan Late sept. early october, then into germany and eastern europe in Nov. expected in the US by the end of '03. The size is similar to the Rio Karma.
Karma = 2.7in. x 3in. x 0.9in. G20 = 3.002in. x 3.52in. x 0.49in
I-pod = 2.5in. x 4.09in. x 0.64in

I'm very interested in this product, and wondering how it will compare to the 20gig Ipod for windows and the Rio Karma. A very small and compact 20gig mp3 portable will me my next investment, so I'm trying to do some research now. The only thing I think would be a big plus would be the FM tuner. Thanks for the pictures in your posts, Ioman. Which do you think is easier to use: the circular dial on the face of the Ipod or the toggle switch on the side of the G20?

Toshiba is known for its stability and quality in electronics and firmware updates moreso than all these "amateur companies" like the makers of the Archos and Odessey 1000. The battle for first place in my book is between the Ipod for windows, the G20, and the Rio Karma.
