Checkout our latest review of the Samsung Yepp YP-55V (http://reviews.designtechnica.com/review426.html) The Samsung Yepp YP55V offers larger-than-average storage capacity compared to other MP3 players, yet is still much more affordable than going the MP3 jukebox route.

Somone mentioned in the user review that this was not a well designed unit because it was not expandable. I have to argue that not ever product on the market has to have the features of a Swiss army knife in order to be considered good.

Does the Apple iPod support Ogg Vorbis? Does it cost under $199 brand new? Does it have an FM tuner or can it record from multiple sources?

A product does not have to support every format on the market to be considered good. In this case the Yepp is a solid player that sounds good and has a nice overall polish to it. When I think about the things that I immediately want in an MP3 player, Samsung seems to have addressed this. And 256MB is not standard so it it is an extra bonus in my mind. Not everyone wants a hard drive to lug around, I certainly do not while working out or traveling.

Oryx3 posted in the user review section but I moved it over to the forums:

"The specs said 15 hr playback time, but I was wondering, what is the maximum record time (for voice recording)? I am looking for a digital voice recorder, but I need at least 5-1/2 hours recording time."

Hello from a new user :)

I have a question regarding this player. Was about to order it online, when I noticed it specificed that max supported bitrate was 128.

That's fine! However, if I choose to upload my 320 Cardigans song that I ripped off the CD I bought, does that mean the player will not be able to play it?

Welcome!

That's a great question. I would definitely drop it a number for max 128 kb/s. Most of my mp3s are 160+ and many with VBR (128-192). Anyone confirm this? Is there a firmware update available to remedy this?

Brandon

One guy posted a user review that said he listened to music at a higher bit rate. I hardly doubt that Samsung would limit the bit-rate, I mean why does it matter, thememory will be full either way.

Also, if you look at the specs on Samsungs page it says the player is 8" tall...haha we all know that is not correct. Looks like someone posted the specs but had no clue what they were doing.

And the weight specified on Samsung's page is " 9lbs. "

Went ahead and downloaded the user manual from their website, manual clearly states that the Yepp 55V supports the following files:

MPEG1/2/2.3 Layer 3 ( 8kbps - 320kbps, 8khz - 48khz )

and for WMA

( 48kbps - 192kbps )

Sure of it now that it can play back any sort of mp3 file, and that they just simply went ahead and mis-specified a whole bunch of things. I have a Samsung monitor, and their RAM for a long time now, both kept me happy. Going to give this one a shot, and once it ships, will post a decent user review.

Thanks for researching that. We will have to change that information in our review so others know. Cannot wait to read your user review!

I just ordered the YP-55V and it's on its way. I was wondering if anyone who has it already has used it for running. Does the "carrying case" work well for running and how well are you able to access the buttons and make adjustments? I can't imagine anyone wanting to run with it using the neck strap as it would annoyingly bounce all over the place. I'm hoping it doesn't conk out after a small amount of uses from a little bit of contact with sweat..

Also, when I saw the dimensions listed for it, my guess was that they mistakenly put the specs for the size of the packaging, but I haven't seen that yet. Although I can't imagine that even with the packaging it weighs 9lbs.

If you click on the specs page of the review, it looks like it comes with a belt clip, not an arm band which kinda sucks. I hope the headphones cord is long enough to go from your belt to your ears. and ya, the weight and dimension info has to be wrong.

The yp-55v comes with a carrying case and a neck strap. but the carrying case doesnt work very well...u cant really put it on your belt...it has a valcro strap on the back....but its kinda hard 2 get the mp3 player in the carrying case...and its also hard 2 press the buttons and change track...

and the carrying case also has a place for u 2 put the little usb adapter that comes with it...
